9880 CPU fan has stopped working

hello,

A few days ago, I installed a utility to show the temperature of the cpu core(s). My 9880 has a P4. I could not see the temperature reading with HWMonitor, SpeedFan, or RealTemp.

coincidence...?

Now, the regular automatic cpu fan stays off after booting. It's silent, and the machine reboots after a few minutes (from overheating?)

I can start the fan with <Fn> + <F2>.

While the high fan is running, the machine does not reboot.

Question...

How do I get the regular fan functions to work again?

Thanks.

- Removing the utility: would this help? yes? no?
- No? -> Got a restore point? Use it
- worst case scenario: re-install the whole system.

Thanks, I'll try options 1 and 2 now.

I hear a very faint fan running now.

Now a stronger fan came on...

I think it worked.

The BIOS advanced option of Fan Control has 2 options:

Continuous
Automatics

It is set to Continuous (never have changed it)

Thanks!

I'll let it run for a few hours and see.

Very nice - that was easy - I'd be careful in using those temp monitoring apps, not all of them are safe.

cheers ...
