never had a recovery disk other options

Borrow an installation disk from someone. You can either spend 1 hours to re-install the system or days and many headaches trying to fix the optical drive issue like yours on the net.

On Gateway laptops, F11 is the standard way to enter the recovery procedure - later BIOS's on most models stopped showing this to boost boot in to Vista... If no discs came with the laptop and its new, not second hand (or you are the only owner) there will be a recovery option, which as I said is normally F11 after the Gateway BIOS splash screen - F10 at that point takes you to the boot options of CDROM/Hardrive or network..

If the recovery partition is absent, you are going to have to do what qhn suggested and borrow a Vista disc and repair or reinstall that way... You will have to get drivers though, usually for video and network....

So you put the installation CD in the drive, reviewed the BIOS setting to start from CD first, restarted the notebook and ... nothing?

Can you elaborate doing nothing? Error codes? error messages?

These are error codes within Windows, what happened when you tried booting up (before even getting into Windows) with the installation CD?

It accepted the cd for for operating system restore and now I cannot connect to the internet, The graphics are bad and its saying The Drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). theres also an (other drivers) tab that say -Network Controller,Unknown Device, -Video Controller. And also when I connect the ethernet cable is it suppose to recognize it automatically?

At least it's a bit of good new - that the optical drive is being recognized by system BIOS.

I am not sure about the system restore that you have - best thing to do is to perform a brand new installation of the OS - this will ensure that the LAN card is working, allowing you to connect to the net this way, and getting updates and drivers (from Gateway Support Site direct)

I did a brand new install of OS, not with the internal dvd drive but with the external one, the internal drive is still not reading dvd's or anything, but its now showing, and its not allowing me to connect to the net either it does not recognize the ethernet when I plug it in.

Which OS version do you have now on the hard drive? It is quite odd that a clean OS installation would not recognize the ethernet.

I already downloaded the wireless driver with my other computer and put it in a usb flash, so i put it in my notebook and when I tried installing it it says ( This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor. I am installing the graphics one pretty fine.

I have a windows vista 32 bit, and I had the windows vista ultimate 64 bit, and couldn't find the disc for it so I borrowed one and its the Home Premium one.

Sounded like you tried to use a 32-bit driver on a 64-bit OS (or vice versa). If you are using 64-bit, I recommend that you get on the net (first) and let Windows picking up the appropriate driver for your wireless device.

I cannot connect to the net, It does not read neither the wireless nor the ethernet cable. And the one I tried installing did not work either, how can I find the right one with out internet on another computer, Oh and I installed the 32bit on a 64bit.
Let's go back a bit - you now have a 64-bit OS on your notebook, correct?

Good - try re-installing the OS again. This time with the ethernet cable connected to your notebook. Let the installation going through normally, with all the standard steps!

I find it very hard to accept that basic Windows (XP and above) clean installation cannot see the LAN port unless you have a LAN port hardware issue - which I don't think that you have, at least from all the posts so far.

Does not matter - a clean OS installation should see the LAN port as mentioned above. If it can not see the port right of the bag then either the installation was not cleanly done or you have bad LAN hardware issue (which, again, I don't see from your posts til now)
