What notebook is best for a student?

Hello!

I'm looking for a notebook.. obviously lol. I currently have an HP with a 17" screen but the back light is always going out. Its been really slow lately so its time for a new one!

I'm looking for something with long battery life (I have class for 4-6 hours in a row). I want something that has a battery life of around 6 hours.

Wants:
6+ hour battery life
250+ MB of memory
15" + screen
price: up to $800

Thank you!

Maybe I should be a little more specific to help you guys out.
Currently I have an HP Paviollon DV9700 with an intel centrino duo processor and a nvidia graphics card. It has a 17.1 inch screen which is probably larger than I need. Its nice for watching videos but it isnt that practical for taking to class (it's pretty heavy lol).

For my new laptop im not necessarily concerned with having the most amazing computer. I mostly use my pc for launching basic applications (skype, msn, etc). As a student i really only need my computer for this, internet, and word documents for note taking and homework.

I do watch videos, movies, and tv show on my laptop from time to time so something with a half decent video card would be nice.

All in all, I want something that's pretty basic, lightweight, has a long battery life, and something that will be able to last me for a few more years.

Thank you for all your help1

HP and a few other manufacturers are offering discount on 15"-ish notebooks. Any of these models would satisfy your needs as stated above.

For long battery performance (6hrs plus) you would need models with ULV processors (ASUS seems to stand out in this category due to style, performance).

cheers ...

The problem with recommending ASUS in this case is the price point. The only model that comes to mind that's 15" and stands a chance of hitting 6 hours of battery life is the U53, and it's over $1000, as are most ASUS notebooks. The few that can be had for under $800 won't meet the specifications (15", close to 6 hours or more battery life). There are a couple 13" models that come closer to that price point (around $900) that get over 6 hours on a charge, but no 15" ones with anywhere near that kind of battery life.

Thanks!
I had been looking at the ASUS ones and they all seem to be over my price point too. Guess its time to save up a little more and invest in either an ASUS or a Macbook

You need to get an extended battery for whatever system you choose.
For example, dell systems usually come with a 6 cell battery. You can purchase an extended 9 cell (or in some cases a 12 cell) to get the added battery power.

Things that will determine how long your system will last on a single charge are the cell size of the battery, how bright you keep the lcd display, that amount of optical drive usage. Watching a DVD on your laptop will eat up the battery faster than working on a spreadsheet.
