CPU Upgrade problem (Dell i9300)

Hello!

I am having a bit of a problem, and I hope someone is able to guide me in the right direction to resolve the problem.
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that is running a Pentium M 730 1.6 GHz processor and a ATI Radeon X300 128mb GPU. The laptop is showing its age and served me well. It’s been drug all over the world to Kosovo, Germany, Bulgaria, Greece and of course Stateside.

I don’t have the $$ to buy a new laptop, but I have some replacement parts on hand that were not very expensive. I have installed a used nVidia 6800 256mg card and Pentium M Dothan 770 2.1GHz CPU.

Here is my problem….

I installed the CPU and the GPU and turned on the system. The computer started to boot up and, would beep once after about 3-5 seconds and shut off. No display was shown. I removed the GPU and installed the original 128 card. Same result.

I then took out the CPU and reinstalled the original 1.6. Computer worked fine. I then went back and installed the new GPU (256 card) with the 1.6 CPU and started the computer, and it worked fine.

Obviously there is an issue with the 770 2.1 cpu…

Am I missing a step in replacing the CPU? I’ve never encountered this with a desktop…Do I need to change the settings somewhere in the BIOS? I looked there and found the CPU settings, but it's not allowing me to do changes... :::Shrug:::

I am at a loss, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Coben

Would it be possible that the replacement CPU in question is not functioning correctly? Can you confirm that it works on another system?

What about BIOS - is it up to date?

cheers ...

The BIOS is AO5 iirc, and I do not have another test computer that I could install the CPU on...

I fear that the CPU IS the problem, but wanted to verify before I go back to the seller and indicate a problem...

What you have done was more than saying that the CPU was the cause of the non booting up. The seller should prove it to you that the CPU is functioning before we want to go further with diagnostic - my recommendation.

So my thinking that the CPU should be plug and play....going from a 1.6 to a 2.13, in this instance then, is correct?

From what I read 9300 support fine M770
That beep seems to report an error?
Try to redo all things an pay more attention to CPU,also take a look at their pins if are all OK.
Reset your BIOS or let it few time without cMOS battery.
Also look at led indicators (caps, nun, scroll lock) and compare between working cpu and other one.

But most probably if that M770 is well mounted and still not working is defective CPU

OK, I will try that again, I didn't notice a light, but I will look. I checked the CPU and there are no bent or missing pins, and I had it "Keyed" correctly for insertion. The bios is A05 which is the last one posted on Dell.com I have to look on how to reset the bios.... I don't see a jumper...

BIOS is reseted if lost backup battery.
That's annoying sometimes, when I dismantle my 9400 there is a delay when BIOS complain about settings and after few time I'm presented with a option to enter BIOS to adjust settings.
So, no jumper just remove CMOS (backup) battery for some time.
But that have poor chance to be the problem.
At that level only LED's could diagnose the problem.
Don't know for 9300 but for 9400 there is a debug connector where connected with RS232 interface you can get some messages from BIOS.
I'll try to search if this is present on 9300 too but this require some skills in soldering.
Best approach will be to find a way to test CPU if is OK,maybe CPU is the problem.

OK, have computer apart and put NEW cpu back in to test. When I apply power all 5 lights illuminate and then go out. The computer doesn't even start too boot up. I have the BIOS battery disconnected and will leave it sit for 20 mins or so....

I don't expect anything will change though.
