I just wanted to post a big thank you to members of this forum for helping me resolve a freezing/usb port not working/not charging fault on my Aspire 5003 wmli, a previous post suggested a dead battery, which was spot on, I fitted a new battery & hey presto its working! thanks for the help. 
a new battery was definitely better than a new laptop.
