8510p Win7 battery charging issue

Hi -- this issue has been raised in a few other threads, but they might be a little old

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=207986

My situation is similar; the battery currently stops charging after a few seconds, in windows, reporting "plugged in, not charging". The external battery will charge *sometimes* when connected to another laptop, in the docking station. The internal battery I can't test elsewhere, but had been recently showing dismal life (even when charged 100%) and only charges intermittenly when in windows (and never when off).

There were 2 incidents with these batteries. When I got the laptop (ebay - aug '10) they only supplied a 65w adapter and when I full charged the battery the first time (while running), it got very hot, but worked reliably after that. Recently, I asked someone at home to put my laptop on the station to charge it, and after that the extended battery started having trouble - the laptop wasn't pushed down all the way onto the dock (?).

Maybe this additional information will help someone out there diagnose the issue. I've tried every combination I can think of to troubleshoot, but the results seem inconsistent.

--HP 8510p w/windows 7 - no other issues
--internal (14.4v) and extended (10.8v) batteries
--using 65w + 130w chargers, and docking stations (the 130w is an extra docking station adapter)

Ideas?

I would hope to hear something about batteries that would describe a specific difference between 3rd party and "genuine".
For example, the batteries have a "smart battery" IC could be corrupt or non-functional, resulting in a battery that cannot be properly calibrated. That kind of information is useful. I need tangible things.

I would love to have this info myself Not even batteries resellers can give anything concrete.

Just a little update, in case this helps others. I did get a new generic main battery from amazon and it charges and works fine. The existing main battery seems to have stabilized but only lasts 30 min.

The extended piggyback (u-shaped) battery still gives me +2 hours or so, but it takes a week to charge the thing on another laptop because it only charges for 10 seconds at a time, intermittently. It does this on any of the 4 hp laptops I have, so it doesn't appear to be a faulty charging circuit on the motherboard(s).

EDIT: actually... the more the extended battery is charged (% full) the more it lets itself be charged. So when it's empty, it rarely gets into the charging state, but it's pretty consistent when it gets near full. Any explanations on this?
