m17x R1 Graphics Issue

Hello

I followed "The Moo's" Video guide to changing the GPU and when I re-inserted the new card (GTX260M -> GTX280M) then bios screen got really fuzzy and wouldent detect the GTX280 in the bios (a03 i believe or it might be a02). So I put the 260 back in and its doing the same thing. Do the heatsink screws matter because they are not done up as they are not screwing in properly. I have tried it with and without the HS and got the same results.

Help?

try a reset

Remove Battery, AC power

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds

try again

If not, remove the Ram battery for about 30 seconds and try again

Have tried the cmos reset you suggested but not the RAM one as it was working fine before I swapped the GPU, If i put the 260 back in it lets me enable hybrid graphics but does not on the 280.

removing the CMOS Ram battery may help when swapping the GPUs give it a shot.

Also are the 280M GPUs from another R1 or a different laptop brand ?

What version of BIOS are you running - update to at least Ver 3 or Ver 5. (not 4)

Aren't GPUs just GPUs? There goes the upgrade (non-proprietary) ability

cheers ...

I will give removing the CMOd battery a try although ive reset it a few times, Its a GTX280m from ebay and I dont think it said it was from an alienware but it is stated that it works fine. I believe its A02 but I will check tommorow and post my findings.

Some are flashed with a custom VBIOS.

The pixelated screen workers on both GPU's atm, shouldent taking them both out enable just the 9400? as even when its switched to the 9400 it becomes pixelated

can you try on an external monitor ?

it is beginning to look like you have a bad pair of 280m GPU's

I only bought 1 GTX280 also the original GRX260 card is doing the same.
Will try the external monitor.

ok I got a bit more info for you, I reckon the 280 is faulty so I am going to return it so I have put back in the GTX260m and did a complete re-install using the onboard graphics installing all the drivers. Now when I boot using hybrid graphics on the 260 when it gets to the desktop all I see is a blank screen with the cursor, If I do some clicking and CTRL+ALT+del it will eventually bring up the desktop but it reverts to the 9400M.

Any more help would be really apreciated.
Thanks guys

I had this issue with my SLI 260M when I had a bad driver installede. I did a safemode boot, ran CCleaner before I uninstalled the driver, restarted back into safemode ran CCleaner again, then I booted back up and it logged into windows normally with no drivers but at least my desktop worked. I then reinstalled the drivers to the most up to date nvidia drivers from their webpage which are WHQL certified and my laptop has been running perfect ever since. No issues what-so-ever, driver version i am using is...266.58

it makes sense the 280 is faulty, it should be fully compatible and plug and play with the R1.

the only other thing I can think of is the 280 and the 260 come as a Master and slave option.

If the 280 was a slave card it may ont work properly either.

I believe there is a VBIOS difference and a part number (dell verions) difference
