Install Ubuntu on DELL Mini 9 from the internet WITHOUT USB Key?

Hi

I'm about to buy a second-hand DELL Mini 9 netbook here in Spain where I'm living and teaching (and my laptop just go stolen).

My problem with it is that it has Spanish Windows on it....

* I have no interest in keeping or using Spanish Windows...
* I want a simple free reliable Netbook OS

Therefore my solution is to download Ubuntu Netbook Remix ...

But on the website http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download it says I need a bootable USB Key to trial it first...

Isn't there a way to just install it directly with no USB Key?

thanks for any help or advice

You should be able to install Ubuntu direct onto your drive. It is noted ..

"Using a USB stick means that you can trial Ubuntu without affecting your current system. And you can install it alongside or instead of your system whenever you're ready."

So only if you are concerned with saving the previous OS, if not - go for it!

cheers ...

but isn't the download for a USB boot?

Where can I download the straight installer to run in Windows?

thanks

I could not find any

I might be wrong since the USB stick is being used as replacement for optical drive in any Linux standard installation.

Moving this to Linux for more input.

Download wubi.exe... Run that in windows and it installs itself as a folder within windows. Rebbot and you get an option to boot into windows or Ubuntu.. It is easier with a USB drive...

I should note, Wubi will not remove Windows from your drive, and Ubuntu can still be affected by a virus from within Windows should you contract one, so it is not necessarily the best option, but can be useful.

Also I don't believe that netbook remix has the WUBI installer, there is a way around this if you want the netbook remix and that would be to install the packages after you install default Ubuntu via WUBI, but I have never tried this. Then again I could be wrong and there does exist a WUBI installer for just the netbook remix version.

Out of curiosity, what is the issue for you with using a USB drive to do the install?
