Pavilion ZV6000 Screen very Dark, backlight and inverter seem to be working fine

Hello guys, I am trying to fix my laptop screen and I first started with troubleshooting the backlight by installing a new one and also measuring the output AC voltage on the inverter and I got Zero volts. So then I moved on to the inverter and it is getting about 19 volts DC Input but once again nothing on the output side. So I was sure it was the inverter and I bought a new one from ebay and it came sealed and it was the exact same part. Once again it behave the same way, no output voltage. Could it be that they sent me a bad inverter? I can see the screen just fine and the mouse pad works with no problems, I also tried adjusting the brightness with the keyboard and nothing.
The lid switch SEEMS to be working fine since the computer goes into standby when I press it and when pressing it repeatedly I never get the backlight flashing on and off. Also the output video works fine. Any ideas???thanks in advance.

I take it that you can hook up an external display and working fine with it?

yes that is correct the external video works fine. Does anybody have the exact voltages that are supposed to go through the cables going into the inverter?

or a better way to test the lid switch?thanks

HP is notorious for lid switch getting stuck, but what you described sounded to me that the inverter itself is bad. Go for a replacement before writing the LCD off.

Well I already replaced the inverter with a new one and I get the same thing. So you think that the replacement inverter is also bad?I get voltage input but no AC output from the inverter.Thanks.

I would ask for a replacement inverter again. Try with an OEM if you can.

Can also be cable from motherboard to screen and motherboard to inverter... You have tried the obvious with the screen brightness... Also try disconnecting the mouse, it can cause issues like this (rare, but it happens)...

Yes I have tried changing the brightness and nothing.

ok, now about the cables. The cable from mobo to lcd should be ok given that it displays everything fine, I can see that the bulb is just off.

Now the cable from the mobo to the inverter is acting strange. Is the shielding around the bundle of wires conductive?Because I run a continuity test and it beeps.
Also some of the cables going into the inverter have continuity with the shielding of the wires, why is this? The pic shows what I mean by shielding.

Does anybody have information on the voltage of each of the wires? Also can the motherboard itself be bad or is it unlikely? Thanks

It is unlikely that the motherboard is bad since you can work with an external display and it boots up

Would it be better and cheaper just to replace the cable unit?

Well I opened up the shielding and there are two wires that are completely bare which is why they had continuity with the shielding so I guess that is fine, so back to the inverter again.

If you replaced the inverter with another that's guaranteed to work, the inverter should not be the issue.. I would still try with a replacement inverter and LCD cable...

Guys I got the replacement inverter today and I got the same result. Voltage in but no voltage out. Any ideas? Does anybody know exactly what voltage I should be seeing and varying? Thanks.

Anything guys? You guys think the mobo is bad?

Does anybody have the correct voltage output going to the inverter? Thanks.

First off just because it works on external does not mean that it is not a inverter issue

the output on a inverter should read 700-1000 AC volts... i can test it on a ZV5000 testbed i have and post the exact output tomorrow.

Inverters are common to go bad in this model so you might have a bad inverter

Try testing the fuse on the inverter right next to the connector that you plug the cable from the motherboard should be a component listed F1 check to make sure you get a ohm reading across it.

Also do you have the data portion of the cable plugged into the back of the LCD... the computer has to detect a LCD in order to turn on the back light

and have you tried (with the external plugged in) switching back to the LCD with the FN+F4 key.... (probably wont do anything but try it)
