Area 51 m17x Win7 64 Driver - Chipset Help

Hello all, i could use some help from my fellow alienware owners. I have recently reached out to alienware support to find the latest Windows 7 64 bit drivers for my Alienware m17x. They have provided thefollowing link, which is one of the links i asked them about as well.

http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/a...i=&p_topview=1

I am curious about the chipset driver as the older one was 8.x whereas this is 1.x which seems off to me. I went ahead and installed to their recomendation, and as it turns out it is in reality 9.x which made me feel better.

Here is my issue, i went through the install (i thought successfully) however, I do not see ANY component in the windows device manager that has the name of this chipset driver nor the version number. (Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset) (version 9.1.1.1019)

First off, has anyone had issues installing the chipset.

Second off, does anyone know what component in the device manager should be showing this driver name/version.

I am trying to do a nice clean install of windows 7 on my alienware, as i really like the machine, but i want to make sure everything is absolutely perfect.

Thanks all !!

Additionally, does everyone agree with the list of drivers, installation order, etc?

Windows 7 can mask the chipset device in the devices list - it's normal.

As far as installation order: chipset and then GPU and then the rest it my motto. But best is to let Windows 7 picking up the needed drivers from within its updates.

Is there any way to validate the chipset driver has installed correctly? The installation seemed a little overly quick in my opinion.

Sometimes you get that feeling that even when an installation completes, something seems off.

Have faith Try Everest Home or Sandra Lite to see what chipset and version you have?

Yeah. The old version is still out there, just that they stopped adding more to it since 2006

Ok installed sandra and it doesn't seem to give too much detail on the chipset, and it doesn't seem to link to any of the descriptions in the IntelChipset log (under c:\Intel\Logs)

I noticed at the end of the logfile the following (this can't be good):

[InstallDev]
!!! ERROR 0x6: Error waiting for thread.
[Finish]
[ResponseResult]
ResultCode = 0

Here is what Sandra says about my chipset (again no match to any of the description in the IntelChipset log from my installation)

Chipset
Model : ASUS Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Express Processor to DRAM Controller
OEM Device Name : Intel Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Express Processor to DRAM Controller
Revision : A4
Bus : Intel AGTL+
Front Side Bus Speed : 4x 200MHz (800MHz)
Maximum FSB Speed : 4x 200MHz (800MHz)
Width : 64-bit
I/O Queue Depth : 12 request(s)
Maximum Bus Bandwidth : 6.25GB/s
Maximum Power : 8.00W

I would ignore this in your case with the Windows 7. If it is giving you no issue, why searching for one?

Cause I am paranoid LOL..

No... I just want to make sure everything is installed right from the start.... that message at the end of the Chipset Driver's logfile bothers me alot

Nah - just software error. I always take the system tools with a grain of salt - really.

If you were missing any chipset drivers there would be a unknown device listed in your device manager most likely. or you would have some feature missing like the LAN port, Wireless option etc.

If everything seems to be there your probably OK

All,

All my drivers are working perfectly, and I have no unknowns, so I am all good.... I guess I got a little paranoid when I saw that error in the log + the chipset really didn't seem to update any devices in the device manager...

Now I have 1 more issue to solve and it is driving me absolutely mad, if anyone wants to help me out:
