I need some advice: Upgrading the CPU?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and also a recent owner of a M17x R2 and a pleasure to meet you all.

My current processor is the i7 720qm and my question is would upgrading to the i7 920xm give me a significant performance upgrade for gaming. Such as improved framerates?

I kinda had high expectation of this laptop running Crysis at all Very High settings with the 5870 CF, but I had to tone down some of the settings back to High and Very high for a smoother gameplay.

So I thought maybe the CPU is bottlenecking from all the information the GPU is sending, will someone please enlighten me if this is the case or not. Thank you in advance

Significance improvement (CPU)? - No. Review your background processes and games patches.

you may see a few more FPS with a 9xx CPU, but most of the performance is GPU related.

Best advice is keep an eye on driver updates. but you maybe able to snag a good ES CPU on ebay in which case go for it.

Thank you guys for the quick reply. As for the driver, I am using the one from Dell's support site, I'm guessing there's a better driver out there? Can someone please recommend a driver?

As for the 920xm, would I probably be seeing at least ~5 fps increase for my games? Thanks

Stay with manufacturer's driver is always the best bet if you have no issue so far. ATI is not in the business to give out drivers direct to notebooks owners

But you can try playing with different settings within the driver management (ATI catalyst or something like that from Dell)

Thanks for the advice!

Well now I have been looking around on eBay and I guess my other best option so far is to go with the SSD since upgrading CPU doesn't yield much performance in games.

Thank you guys very much, it helped me make a better decision for my system

SSD upgrade is very good - you'd see a performance improvement for sure. Have fun.
