t-6859u hangs randomly...

hi,

i have a gateway t6859u run by ubuntu 10.10 that seems to hang randomly while its running, sometimes even before or during when the bios splash screen is displayed. and once even during a bios setting session.

i feel like it should be a hardware problem otherwise everything is running very nicely.

is there a bios update? or does it need a new bios?

please advise.

Check (run a test) the ram and the hard drive out and see.

hi,

it hung running memtest86


i think it is a bad memory module.

i will try to run it again.

If you have 2 modules just take out one and test it one at a time. See if the system runs smoothly that way.

this seems to have been the answer. it seems to be running fine with the one module thats in it now.

Use that working module on the other slot. This would tell us if both ram sockets are working.

ty qhn,

it appears to be the slot. this could explain why it passed the memtest86 test.

also, the notebook is running fine with the other module in the first (good) slot.

can you advise on how to fix the bad slot or should i just run without anything in it?

Use a magnifying glass and see if you can detect something in the area (dirt, bad soldering spot etc ...) Nothing you can do much about a bad slot but just live with it until you replace the comp itself (maybe someone else can give an input on this)
