Inspiron 1545 - broken CCFL screen, replacable with LED

Hi all,

Done some searching on this and can't find a answer to if it is possible.

What I have is a Dell Inspiron 1545 fitted with a 15.6 inch CCFL 1366x768 LCD screen - the laptop was dropped and the screen has smashed, however rest of the laptop appears OK so it probably worth repairing.

However I am finding a lot of the replacement screens are the LED backlight versions rather than CCFL - the question is can I simply replace the CCFL version with a LED version?

I know that the cable is wrong and would have to be replaced, but is that all that is different or does the LED version use a different motherboard.

If anyone as sucessfully done this then I would appreciate your thoughts. Also is it worth doing or do I simply get a replacement CCFL screen?

Thanks,
Mark

I personally would just stick with the OEM LCD, higher resolution if you can find one.

Generally speaking if the laptop had the LED screen option, than it would work providing you had the complete kit to do so.

The key item is the video cable from the GPU to the LCD screen. If there is one that is compatible with your laptop then you could probably get it done.

I am not aware of any have been done, but as QHN has mentioned you may want to stick to the known working config, unless there is proof the unit supports a LED screen.

thanks for both your replies - I'm going to do what you suggest and stick with the CCFL screen

Unfortunatly not been able to find any CCFL screens with a higher resolution than 1366x768 (a full HD one would have been nice, but I've only found these in the LED version), however it is just going to be a general use laptop so that will be good enough.

Just need to make sure no other faults exist before spending the money out (the Esc key doesn't fit properly - metal clip on the keyboard is broken off, but I can live with that)

Keyboard should be cheap to replace. Good luck

had someone else drop their Inspiron 1545 and the screen survived, however there was other damage and they didn't want to repair it so I got to strip it for parts.

Found the screen on this one was the LED version so decided to see if it could fit to it to the CCFL machine.

Happy to say the LED screen went straight in with no problems at all - all I had to do was remove the CCFL screen, cable and inverter then fit the LED screen and cable.

Hi Markjq,

I know this thread is a year old, but you seem to be the only person to have upgraded to LED from a CCFL dell 1545. My CCFL screen is damaged and the replacement LED screen is £30 cheaper than a new CCFL even with buying the cable for LED.

So I would like to know if it really is as simple as you say. And you don't need to change the motherboard?

The connector on the 30pin CCFL is the same as the 40pin LED at the motherboard end?

I'm really trying to cut costs and any advise would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

James

I just got the cable in and it works. So yes you can put an led backlit scree in place of the ccfl. your just need to replace the cable to. Cable Part # R267J.

Thanks Rim Tech,

I got the R267J cable and an LED screen, removed the old cracked ccfl screen and the inverter, plugged in the new screen and it worked perfectly! Saved me a lot of cash cheers.

The cheap screen does have one dead pixel but its hardly noticable.

Thanks for your response and willing to test the theory.

Kind regards

J

Thanks for all of the info. I have a 1545 also that the screen got cracked and was hoping that I could change it out for a led. They are a lot cheaper and they look way better. thank you for all of your input it was very helpful.

Nice job all in converting to LED format from CCFL, one other question. If the original Inverter connection is removed, does the LED screen require any power connections or is power drawn from the GPU cable?

Thanks for any info!

The LED pulled its power direct from the GPU Cable.
