AlienWare AREA-51 M9750 Boots Up and Dies after about 3sec

Hi it's my first post on this forum and I'm not a super techy person, so forgive me the simple language in describing my problem.

Just yesterday my AlienWare M9750 shut down abruptly while I was working on it. It has happened in the past when it would get hot. This time the laptop wasn't hot at all though. I tried to boot it up again and it only started up for about 10 sec. Tried again and it started for about 5 seconds. I left it sitting for about 10 minutes and tried again and it booted up all the way to the log-in screen and died. I left it overnight (unplugged) and today it would only boot up for about 3 sec each time I tried.

Here are some facts/symptoms that will be hopefully of some help to you:
- the DVD drive, the alienhead and hard drives make noise when it tries to boot up (a healthy boot-up noise)
- the fans start up for about 1 second (at boot-up) and then stop.
- the power cord LED on the computer and LED on AC adapter are both on
- My battery is dead
- same symptoms when trying to boot up with the battery out.

I took the laptop to the shop today and had a technician look at it. He said it's hard to say what exactly is wrong with it but his bet is that it's the ac input on the computer (it's a little loose) and that computer is not getting enough power to boot up. Is it possible even though the computer indicates the ac is plugged in (power plug LED is on on the computer)?

His second guess was that it's a fried CPU.

I will greatly appreciate some help with this issue before I dish out $150-$300 on the repair.

Thank you!

When was the last time you open it up and gave it a good cleaning with new thermal paste for the CPU? That would be the first thing I do, based on your description.

cheers ...

I clean it about every 6 months. I did not put a new thermal paste on but have it on the to do list after reading countless forums yesterday and today. Do you think though that putting the thermal paste on would solve this problem? The computer only turns on for 3 sec and then dies...

Thanks!

We don't know until you take it apart and put new thermal paste onto it. It does not take long for a CPU to heat up and shut the system down to protect itself.

I have not seen a CPU problem like this, they typically work or not

It may well be a problem with the power jack or the power supply itself

Boot into BIOS and see if the adaptor is identified (if it has that option)

If the DC jack is loose or damaged you maybe able to pick on up on Ebay and get that computer shop to install it if your not comfortable doing it.
