Nvidia Vista Drivers

Hey Guys,

So I downloaded driver 179.48 from Nvidia's site. My 7900GTX isnt actually listed in the supported devices on Nvidia's site so I figured if I flashed my card to a 7950GTX it would work.

Its odd though because when I search on the site for a driver for Vista 32 for a 7900GTX the 179.48 driver is what the search results turn up. However, like I stated when you look to see what devices are actually supported the 7900GTX isnt actually listed.

Do you think flashing to a 7950GTX will make the driver recognize the card?

Edit- To make my issue known when I try to install the driver it says it cant find compatible hardware.

I think part of the problem too is Vista auto installing video drivers as it sees fit but Ive disabled this feature but when I restart it still installs the old stock driver that it thinks will work.

So at this point Im not sure if its the driver not recognizing the card cuz its not a 7950GTX or if Vista is screwing up the 179.48 install with its crappy auto driver updates/installs
Thanks!

Does anyone know how to disable Vista auto install of drivers? Ive gone to 'Windows Update Driver Settings' and told it to 'never check for drivers when I connect a device' but when I reboot it still installs the lovely driver

Nope Only way is to go back to the device and select manual installation for the driver and pointing it to where you save the file. It is something that I missed from XP

Thanks for the response qhn, its appreciated.

I think I actually tried that one but it asks me to find an INF file. When I extract the driver to my C drive, there are several INF files but I have no idea which one to pick.

What are your thoughts on flashing to a 7950GTX, do you think that will solve the issue or do you think its more of this driver confliction?

Thanks again!

It's more of drivers conflict to me. Can you list out the INFs so other members can chip in? Also you can always try them all - worst case is that it will choke on you but won't kill your system. Create a restore point first before each try.

Well I got it installed but it was sloppy. I had to point to one of the INF's then choose 7950GTX. Its a little wonky with some things but it will be ok for now.

But I have to say. Vista is truly annoying with the fact that it will download a driver for you and install it automatically without asking. This I feel like can cause conflicts.

So this bear me to ask. Does Windows 7 do the same annoying thing?

My next question then is, how do you go about installing drivers in Vista/Win 7 with success? And what steps do you follow to ensure no conflicts will emerge from going from one driver to the newer one?

So when you download the latest drive from Nvidia/ATI what are your next steps? I feel I have to ask because XP is way different from Vista/Win7 in how it handles drivers.

THANKS!

Good to hear it worked out for you - with some pain

Windows 7 - well I like it. It seems to pick up the correct drivers all the time (for me anyway). nVidia drivers can be forgiving with Windows 7, but I would stay away from AMD drivers unless they come direct from the notebook manufacturers.

GPU installation steps for me:
. restore point
. remove old driver completely (we have a good guide here in the NBF Mobile Force section for de-installation)
. install new driver
. pray

When you remove the old driver you dont reboot afterwards correct? Otherwise Win7 will install a stock driver for you....

Have you had bad experiences with AMD driver updates?

Not when it comes direct from manufacturers or within Windows update.
