MT6458 Extended Battery not charging

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a battery for my Gateway MT6458 from a company on eBay. It's rated at 14.4 volts and 7200mAh.

The weird behavior:
When I put the battery in my notebook, it will act like it's charging it for a couple of seconds, but then the charging indicator turns red. The notebook will start off of what little charge is in the battery if the AC adapter is not plugged in. If I go into the BIOS, and go into battery learning, it will attempt learning (showing up as a 6 cell though it's probably a 12), but then the light will turn red again, and it will say: BATTERY MALFUNCTION! (Over voltage) LEARNING FAIL (BAT abnormal).

I've let the company know about the problem, and they sent me a replacement, but I have the same problem. Oh, and my power brick has no problem charging my old battery, so I expect that is not the problem (it's also outputting slightly over its rated 19 volts, but that's with no load).

Any help would be very much appreciated

Ask for another battery replacement. It is not normal but not unprecedented as far as one can have a bad patch of new batteries. A few members here had experience with 3-4 batteries replacement before getting one that worked.

Thanks qhn! It's good to have some reassurance that it is the battery with the issue

I think the company will not be willing to send me another. Not only have they sent me 2 already, but the first time they sent the second one, they sent the wrong battery. When they hear that I need to send this one back, they'll probably just insist on refunding me
That was their initial reaction the first time until I had confirmed the issue was with the battery.

Plenty of batteries resellers around. Good luck with the next one should you be doing that.

Are you buying a "compatable" battery or are you buying one that is the exact same as the original equipment...Lots of grief with compatables...If that is the case, I would suggest an OEM

I have a NX100X that won't run from the battery. It runs from adapter but not battery. The battery shows full charge. Maybe that is the problem being discussed here. Any ideas?

I would try with another battery first, yes. And hope that the issue is only with battery and not something else.

cheers ...
