Centrino System - may be you guys can advise me - Page 2

The HP is a bit beyond me in terms of budget. Looks nice, though.

Although I said I didn't like widescreens: Does one of you know a build-to-order providers in the States who make 15.4" widescreens with 1680X1050 (or whatever it is), i think it's called WSXGA+

I am down to the HP nc8000 and the ASUS M6N as my "finalists".
Do you have an nc8000 yourself now???
You say that the HP screen is good?? Are you referring to the SXGA+, the UXGA or both??? Would I find the HP display to be a good bit better than that on the ASUS (I am considering the 15.1" NOT the 15.4 widescreen on it).
If you have an nc8000, or have seen one, did you find it thick and klutsy, as some have said. Any problems with the touchpad as has been reported??
Thanks,

An additional note about actual IBM reliability. I had an IBM six years ago, or to be more precise... The IBM notebook I purchased had a defective motherboard, and the replacement had successively 3 defective hard disks + toasted USB port + dead floppy drive + CD-ROM broke, and more. That IBM was nothing more but a very expensive trash can, I'd say, because apart the sturdy (and ugly) plastic housing, it had no other asset: what is inside sucks. Granted, it was six years ago, perhaps I was simply unlucky, since everyone seems to agree on IBM's high build quality; hope it's not another fine myth. I'm not buying a new IBM anytime soon, though; once bitten, twice shy.

And no, I wasn't molesting the IBM in any way nor was I throwing it periodically through the window to check how sturdy it was... I currently have a 4+ year old Gateway laptop which has no problem. Except the keyboard that is completely worn out, and the modem that doesn't work anymore; not bad for a laptop used over 10 hours per day.

Now, to get back to the subject (kind of), I have also done my research and here are my words of wisdom: if what you want is a sturdy, silent computer, with a good screen, get the nc8000.

We have purchased 14 ECS notebooks (different model G732-16), and after one year we have problem with just one. And that one might be having problem because of physical damage, it's still on repair. I don't know is it good or bad, but you can caluclate your risk

Thanks for the this input.

How is your experience with the EGS notebooks - are they loud? I find with mine (a P4 based model) that it is very annoyingly loud.

It is hard to be objective. For me it is loud, but nothing more/less than others in this class (desknote). Comapring to desktop with 7 coolers it is pretty quiet. Only older Dell Latitude has less noise, but he tends to have higher processor utilization so even he isn't so quiet when he turn on his coolers.

I think that just my external hard disk has "virtualy" silent fan, and it is quiet... but I feel vibrations when it is running... so I guess nothing is perfect.

Cheers,
A
