M17x-R1 and Seagate GoFlex Pro eSATA

Hello everyone.

I am going to buy a new external hdd. I am considering the seagate goflex ultra-portable 1TB drive with the eSATA cable upgrade. I would just like to know thought if anyone here has used this drive with the eSATA cable on an M17x. Seagate says you need a powered eSATA port for this cable to work. I know that M17x has a powere eSATA but i read some reviews where people who connected this drive to powered eSATA didnt get it work.

1TB drive does need some sort of extra power to run correctly, in general. Unless the eSATA port is constant in delivering power you might get some dropping off and/or not working altogether.

But considering the fact that the M17x has a powered eSATA port, it should work without any glitches, right?

I cannot answer straight to this query of yours

Reminding me the discussion of 4 and 6 wires Firewire port in the past. I would say go for it and make sure that you have the guaranteed that you can return the drive if the performance is not up to par.

As far as it goes, for 1TB drives in our office, either we use an external AC adapter with it, or use an extra USB port to feed power for performance, eSATA or not.

I think pretty much any 2.5 inch (laptop) hard drive will work from a powered port, but check the specs out and reviews for any such drive to be sure
