Just renewed my warranty on a XPS M1710... Good deal?

Hi all! I bought my baby in august 2007 (at which time it was a year-old model already). Got the 3-year complete care warranty, and had to use it once when my video memory died (definitely not from overclocking... ;-). But to be fair, I had high temps too, from the heatsink grille being clogged with dust). It expired in august 2010, and I just renewed it for just shy of $300 (and a bonus $75 gift card), incl. tax, because I just got my tax refund .

My question to you guys is, was this a good deal? This was a $3,000 machine when I bought it, and a new, tricked-out M1710 can still be found for $1,400 on eBay. It's a solid machine, though it's somewhat obsolete for gaming, as nvidia stopped updating drivers for the geforce go 7 series . I can still play l4d alright though.

I suppose the only reason I renewed the warranty is because I'd be f*cked if anything happened to it. But would I have been better off saving the $300 towards a new computer? I could easily build a moderately l33t desktop for $800 or so, but a replacement laptop capable of even basic gaming would probably run me $1,500-ish, no? I won't be able to afford that for a while.

My rule of thumb for notebook value is that they lose 40% of their value each year or tech revision, so it went from $3000 when you bought it to $1800 in 2008 to $1080 in 2009 to $648 in 2010 to $389 now, which means you paid nearly what the notebook is currently worth for the warranty extension.

Computer prices have also dropped since you bought yours. You can get a notebook capable of basic gaming for $1100-1200 and one capable of playing anything out there at high settings for $1800-2000.

So in my opinion you could have saved the $300 towards something better, but I also know that there can be a lot of sentimental value in your computer, so if it's worth $300 to you in order to extend the warranty on your M1710, then that's all that matters.

$300 is just another rental payment towards the usage hopefully for at least another 1-2 years. I would back up everything you have at the moment. Eventually that machine would have to be replaced (parts do wear out on system and can't be replaced at times), by you or via warranty.

cheers ...

it is not bad deal... $300 is your assurance you laptop will be fine for the next few years

i spent about $300-400 upgrading my e1705
- some would say it was not worth it
but the reality is it is still my main pc and for older games
(if i did not upgrade it it would be gathering dust in the shed)

I also got the email of service contract ended for my onsite 4 year contract on the m1710.

No point of renewing after 4 years. Still got 1 year left of consumer warranty (5 years for notebooks etc)

But ive used that onsite service.

1. New dvd rw drive since it didnt work in then vista, old one in an enclosure for 5$ and works.
2. Screen replaced onsite.
3. motherboard, fans, heatsink and graphic card replaced onsite not too long ago.

Still using it since wuxga has gone out of fashion. Full hd is just not the same.
