Asus K50 CPU upgrade questions

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, I have a k50in that I bought about 1.5 years ago as a budget laptop for a poor college kid(myself). To make a long story short I love this thing because it is cheap and does everything I need it to effectively. However, I am looking for a CPU upgrade for this thing since I have been doing more and more cpu stressful operations with it. I am pretty competent with computers but I am having a hard time finding information on what processors will work with my laptop. I have found that I can use pretty much any socket p processor and I am leaning towards a t9600. My main question is, will this work in my laptop? Also I have noticed that the fsb on that cpu is 1066 so will I have to/can I upgrade my ram to match it? Thanks in advanced for any help, anything is appreciated since I am having such a hard time finding out any information.

Thanks, Kevin

This model supports stock Intel Celeron M 900, Intel Core 2 Duo T6400, Intel Core 2 Duo T6500, Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 (or AMD Turion X2 RM-75, AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-84).

Which CPU do you have in at the moment?

cheers ...

I have the t6500 at the moment, but something I have noticed is that the bios revision history states that one of the revisions was to support the P7350 processor so that makes me believe that it will support more cpus than the model originally came with. I have been researching this for a long time and it seems that a notebook that came with a socket p cpu can be upgraded to a higher socket p cpu, my main questions deal with the ram compatibility and the motherboard support. Thanks for the quick response

Thanks, Kevin

I read that one K50 model (K50IN-SX077X) supported P8700. Not sure about if the BIOS would need to be updated. If this can be done then it would be the way to go with the 25W and 2.53GHz that it supports - less heat and good performance.

cheers ...

Thanks for the help, I am going to continue to find out if I can run a t9600, if not then I will give the p8700 a try. Basically I don't have the money to get a more powerful laptop or build a desktop at the moment so this processor upgrade is mainly to hold me over until I can upgrade my whole setup. And as of right now my bottleneck for what I am doing is the CPU. If anyone else has an opinion or information feel free to post.

Thanks, Kevin

My personal feeling is that a CPU upgrade in your case would not help much, especially when you run with an integrated GPU. Max out the ram and a faster hard drive would make more sense in upgrading these systems.

Good luck with the T9600 research.

As long as Asus didn't lock the BIOS to CPUs with 800 Mhz bus speed, the T9600 should work just fine. In regards to your other question, no, you do not have to (nor, I believe, can you) change out the memory for some that matches the CPU bus speed. If you've got 2 800 Mhz memory modules in dual channel, then they have more than enough bandwidth to saturate what any Core 2 processor can handle.

Thanks a lot, I will have to give gentech pcs a call and see what they have to say about the bios

Thanks for all the help guys, I just put in a t9600 and it works great! Just confirming that it works in case someone else wants to upgrade their K50IN.

That's good to hear!

guys is it possible to upgrade the k50in cpu to i-processor? (eg. i-7)

if not, what is the max cpu i can install to my notebook? is it still the core2duo variant?

thanks in advance.

i'm desperate for a fast notebook without buying a new one.

Not sure if you can go from a core 2 duo to an core "i" processor - different form and architecture. Want to try the T9600 as suggested above?

okay now I knew that changing cpu must be within the same family and same socket.

So the best option is either T9600 or T9900.

I'm interested in T9900 but I haven't checked the market price yet.

What ya'll say about this? should i go for T9900?

in my opinion, the 512MB graphic card is good enough for me. I'm more to a faster processor because the graphic is second in mind, after a smooth gaming without a lag.

so u think T9900 would be fine?

T9600 is a sure thing wink.gif I would just stay with it, unless you want to be the pioneer (or guinea pig) with a T9900 winknudge.gif

why picking T9900 consider a guinea pig choice?winknudge.gif

Hey guys. My ONE CENT is Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P9700 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB). I've had it running in ASUS N81 (same socket as yours) without problems. It's clearly the only choice if you're looking for max power available for your chipset and also some solid battery life. It's max. TDP is only 28W compared to any T series that is rated at 35W. Look at below specs. listed for P9000 series directly on Intel's website:

Hope this doesn't deepens your dilemma...emot-awesome.png

Actually it is a great reminder - using P instead T CPU series. As you mentioned, same performance with less heat

P9700 clocked at 2.80 but T9900 clocked at 3.06MHz. Which one is faster then?blush.gif
