Yeah, qhn is right. You should give it a try. I did so with mine and it worked out fine

. I mean, if you get that CPU really cheap (you should) than nothing holds you back from reverting to your original config should the upgrade fail, and resale the CPU with little or no loss.
My take is that it'll work just fine. I've looked around and there are same models with Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz coming up in search. That's good indicator of your chipset's (NVIDIA MCP751 btw) flexibility.

PS: you may want to update your BIOS to the latest version before you start (make sure to select correct OS and update consequently not directly to the latest as skipping BIOS update releases proved to kill some ASUS laptops before
