Need to replace motherboard in Latitude D820!!!!

Per my post, anyone have one laying around?

I was wondering if this is a hard job. I have not torn into this model other than a keyboard & ram. This motherboard has the nvidia 128mb graphics and is showing corruption. The driver also does not install without a blue screen. I see a company on ebay that fixes this exact problem so it must be common. I wonder what they do to fix it.

I ran a memtest with no errors, I also ran the hard drive test for corrupted sectors. However with it showing corruption in the bios, I beleive there is nothing left to do......

Bake the board! We have plenty of tips in Dell Section here. Just patience and a good oven

10 min in the oven at 375F.

Strip everything out good from the board. Place the board corners on aluminum foil balls - balance it well, and on a cooking tray with GPU face up. When 10 minutes done, turn the oven off, leave the door open for at least 45-60min - don't touch and move anything.

Search the section again and read through many threads and posts. Good luck.

I can press down firmly on the GPU and video memory and it does not help at all, so what is this oven trick supposed to do? Not that I have anything to loose but I am not seeing how this will help.

Now a hard drive in a freezer changes the platter to head clearance, so I see how that works.

The baking would, supposedly and surely, restore the contact between the soldering points (in a nutshell)

Very doubtful this will work, but will certainly give it a try. I have nothing to loose. I heard of this with an xbox, but the results vary greatly. I am dying to know how the folks on ebay do it the "professional" way.........

I have decided against the oven trick. qhn, I hope you don;t hold it against me........

In the minimal research I have done, there are two approaches that make more sense, a heat gun, or IR lamp rework station. These methods concentrate heat on ONLY the GPU. Reason being is other low temp devices are installed on the MB AFTER the BGA soldering process is complete. These parts will be damaged in an oven.

IT F#%*ing works perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was indeed skeptical, but I bought an IR thermometer at harbor freight and a pencil tip butane torch. Cut a pop can to help shield the MB from heat. I heated the nvidia chip to 210c and repaired the heatsink to work better with copper sheets.

The video problems and blue screens are now gone. I simply cannot beleive it. I am going to thermal cycle it, on a pillow then in a freezer. I will repeat this process through the week and see if it will fail again.

I beleive that with good cooling, this should not re-occur.
