A1 abroadband - a "one price" International Data Roaming Tariff

Austria's A1 launches abroadband - a "one price" International Data Roaming Tariff

Sure, nothing compares to a local SIM card with a data plan, however if you are abroad it can happen that it's either impossible to get a prepaid SIM with a data plan or for the time of visiting a foreign country, it doesn't makes sense to buy one at all - for instance because it's just a stop-over to get a connecting flight. And while EU citizens are now protected by EU's 50 Euro bill shock protection, it's not applicable for the use of international data roaming outside the area of the European Union, for instance in the Far East, North America or anywhere else in the world. However, Austria's A1 Telekom Austria came up with a smart idea and has recently launched a kind of no-frill offer called "abroadband".

abroadband offers EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA-based mobile Internet access around the world for one price - which is all over the world (at supported partner networks) the same: 0.59 Euro per MB

In the abroadband online shop, users can choose between the abroadband modem incl. abroadband SIM, abroadband Micro SIM or SIM only. And while abroadband isn't a prepaid offer but postpaid, user only have to pay what they used! There's no no contract or commitment required and customers will receive home delivery of the abroadband package by standard or express delivery. The personal "my abroadband area" is where users will find the online bills; new bills are online every 14 days. If abroadband isn't used at all, no bills will be created. Furthermore and even more important because it's not a prepaid offer but a postpaid offer, abroadband says it allows to keep the users costs under control by easily tracking the online use anytime, anywhere using the abroadband "costmanager".

While abroadband supports packet based data connections, neither voice nor SMS or MMS is supported. However, the use of VoIP (Voice over IP) is explicitly allowed!

Last but not least, abroadband mobile promises that if they ever lower their prices, users will automatically surf at the more affordable rate without having to change the tariff plan. Furthermore abroadband mentioned that they are working on offering users even more countries soon.

The abroadband SIM and Micro SIM are available for 19.90 each, the USB stick (a Huawei E173) is available for 49.90 Euro and is currently shipped across Europe (but not Asia, America, Africa or Asia-Pacific).

I bought one, but I can't use it because the registration process fails to complete. I emailed abroadband.com about this and have not had a reply in over a week. I phoned them in Austria 3 days ago, spoke to a pleasant help line man who told me to clear my internet cache. I did this but it didn't fix the problem. He said he had no further suggestions and would pass my problem on to someone else. That was 3 days ago and I have heard nothing more from them since. Disappointing to say the least.

like robert said the registration is not very good an the data price of 59 Cent per MB is too expansive.

I prefer an isolated application for spain or italy. Prepaid-Global offers data sims with rate from 3 cent per mb in italy (Italy Prepaid Data SIM) - the specialist for mobile internet in europe

no one is cheaper than they are...

Man, that is indeed a good price. Wondering how good connectivity it would be outside Italy.

cheers ...

My experience with Abroadband = frustration.  I registered as a business user but was disconnected after a week as their system failed to validate the EU VAT number of my business.  It turned out that they have some fault in their system but even though I could prove the VAT number was valid they were not allowed to let me stay as a user.  What's worse, once registered as a business user it is impossible to switch to a private user - you have to send the gadget back and wait for a new one.  I bought this specifically for use during my holidays and it was not possible to send the old one back and wait for the new one as it would have arrived after my holidays.  Dealing with Abroadband call centre was very frustrating as nobody could make any decisions and they refused to pass the call to someone who could (sorry, there is no-one here).  After a lot of correspondence Abroadband finally agreed to refund the money - that was in July and I am still waiting for this (as of 13th September).  Mr. Goran Zupanic of Abroadband who promised the refund stopped answering my emails after a while.

Also it is very expensive - they charged me €5 for 15 minutes of new browsing on internet.  Don't buy Abroadband!

DO NOT BUY PRODUCTS FROM ABROADBAND

Like many others my experience with Abroadband was really bad. The device never worked. It installed OK and was recognised on my system but could never find a signal even though other devices could. My phone, for example, showed a strong 3G signal was available and connected fine.

Despite two weeks of emails and attempted phone calls I never go through to anyone at Abroadband and never received a single reply to my emails.

As far as I am concerned I have been ripped off.

No connection, no support, no refund - NO USE!
