I have an oldie but goodie 700m. I normally use it to go online or watch movies. Due to XP security and service packs over the years, it can run slow and cache a lot. How much better will it run if I max out the RAM? What is the max amount of RAM can I put in it? Is it easy to replace the RAM? It crucial.com the best place to buy the RAM? TIA

You should be able to go 2GB max on this model. For normal usage I tend to get ram where I can find a good price with at least a good full replacement warranty for the 1st month or 2.

Good luck. Amazon is a good place to get electronic parts, they back their merchandise up pretty good.

I got the ram today. Installed one of the chips on the other side of laptop. The other ram goes in the area beneath the keyboard. However I could not remove one of the screws that covers the ram area. The screw seems to be stripped. What is the best way to remove the screw now...pliers? This is pretty annoying. I may go to the hardware store with the laptop and see if they got something to remove the screw. This is p*ssing me off big time.

Small wire cutter, that's what I would try. Can you load up a pic?

Yeah I was thinking of trying something like that. Its just gonna look strange for me to bring an openned laptop to the neighborhood hardware store. The 700m is kinda small and I want to make sure the fix works. Sorry no easy way to take the pic as my cheap back up fone has no camera. Thnx for help.

Is it working now?

No. I have the wire cutter. But the cover is made out of metal. I'd need a mini-weld device to melt it. I am about to give up on this. Pretty frustrating.

Careful with the heat.

I did not know anyone who had a soldering iron; I did not look that hard either. Somehow I doubt it would get hot enuff to melt the metal. I will stick with 1.2GB of ram.

Try a Dremel with a narrow cutting disk then a small flat blade screwdriver. I've done this more times than I can remember over the years. Someone you know has a Dremel. Takes about 1 second to cut a small slot in these screws. smile.gif

Also note that your upgrading the ram for performance and for best results you do want 2 matching sticks installed.

Good luck

PS.. my wife is still using her old 700m.. I'm still running my well modified Inspiron 9300. The 700m still runs perfect with only upgrading to 2g ram and a larger HD for her. The I9300 runs very hot these days though with 2 fast hard drives and the larger 7800GTX gpu its understandable after all these years. Neither are shutdown that often. I do tend to use my newer Alienware watercooled desktop for my gaming these days.
