Sager 8790 Motherboard Replacement job.

Has any 8790 owners with a dying or dead motherboard ever attempted to open the unit up and replace with a new motherboard? I've just ordered a new 8790 (D87P) motherboard as the screen even seconds after powering from cold is filled with random color horizontal/vertial snowy effect lines. Sager confirmed this as probable artifacting. Am wondering how easy a job this will be or whether to return it to Sager and pay for them to do the new motherboard installation.

It's not that hard to swap out the board. You would need patience and new thermal paste for replacement when putting the CPU and heatsink back afterward.

Ok .. here's an update. Have taken the 8790 to bits (and I mean just that), there are parts everywhere. Some of the screws are so small I dare not breath for fear of blowing them away. The "bad" news is .. I have found a Clevo re-seller who has 'new' 8790 (D87P) Motherboards (yes Motherboards, quite a few new ones in stock!) but they won't sell them 'new' to me, they'll only sell me a re-furbished one. The new D87P Motherboards are kept for when a Clevo dealer requests one formally for replacement. I asked questions like what is the demand for these Motherboards .. when the last D87P Motherboard was sold but no joy one asking that they still won't sell me new.
Have emailed Sager and several offices of Clevo and am awaiting their replies.
If anyone know where to get a new (not refurbished) Motherboard for the 8790 (D87P) please let me know.

Refurbished eh? Forget it. You can make one yourself from the old one since you have nothing to lose. Now that you have the board out, strip it a bit more (plastic stuff that you can get your hand on) and bake it - 10min at 375F in the oven, turn the oven off, leave the door open for 45-60 min before touching anything and we'll see.

cheers ...
