CPU overheating while gaming?

Some games will play fine for about 10 minutes, then my FPS drops to like 5 for about 30 seconds, and everything returns back to normal for another 10 minutes. It seems to happen a lot more with SLI enabled.

I checked Rivatuner and I see that my CPU temps gets up to 60C then drops down to 50C, my GPU temps stay at about 57C.

So I am guessing my CPU is getting too hot, then it is down clocking it self to cool down. This is exactly the same problem I had with my old M1730.

This laptop is completely out of warranty and I am afraid of opening it any further than the GPUs, because I am not really experienced with laptops. And I don't want to risk completely murdering it. So I want that to be my last option.

Your CPU shouldn't be overheating anywhere near 60. Intel designs them to go up to 105. There might be an SLI issue with your video driver.

Or maybe a virus or malware issue

The temps are fine, are you checking the temps on both GPU's ?

I was using the older Dell beta drivers, then I updated to the newest on Nvidia, both drivers performed about the same.

It sucks though, because I can't even play a low-end game like League of Legends without it overheating, if it uses SLI it has that issue.

They both stay under 60C, I reformatted not long ago and it was doing this before. So I doubt it's a virus.

60 c is not over heating by a long shot

90 c or higher is a problem

my temps are in the 40s while idle, and 50-60 gaming

what BIOS version are you using ?

I believe A05, and I had to revert my drivers back to the old dell beta ones. The dreaded random black screen came back.

There is a A06 BIOS out, fixed some issues with the Charger and Battery not charging.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you may have a issue with the secondary GPU

It's not really over heating, but it is failing my 280M card is doing the same thing

if disabling SLI stops the problem it supports the bad secondary GPU ideal.

That is what I thought, but some games have no issue with this. Games like Gears of War, Left 4 Dead 2, and Call of Duty 4 can play for hours at a time without any hiccups. But, however that would explain why any newer drivers seems to give me black screens.

I'll try hooking up another display in split mode and see what happens while gaming.

Update: I seen in GPU-Z that the second GPU load drops to 0%. I turned "Prefer Maximum Performance" on instead of "Adaptive" and it seems to be Running the Crysis 2 demo fine so far.

Update 2: Crysis 2 is running fine now, however Company of Heros is still doing it, does anybody know how to just render a game on the 2nd GPU? I though I could do that by hooking up another display, but according to GPU-Z the game still just renders off the primary regardless of the settings.

Our GPUs might not be failing. I've done some digging, and it seems that a lot of other people are having the black screen and throttling issues.

This EC patch seems to have fixed the throttling issue for many.

And according to this thread, turning off PCI-E 2.0 seems to fix the black screens with the Verde drivers.

I will apply the EC patch, update to Verde drivers, and turn off PCI-E 2.0 tomorrow... and I will inform if this fixes my problems.

I am still waiting to get my GPu's replaced

Just have not been at home to meet with the tech.

Going to see if AW will let me fix it myself

And then I will see if my problems (like yours) go away

Okay I downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia, and turned PCI-E 2.0 off, and I have not got a black screen yet. I have not seen the throttling issue since, but if I do I will then apply the EC patch.

EDIT: For Googlers: I resolved this problem by updating the BIOS to A07, and turning off PCI-E 2.0 with newer Verde drivers.
