Will a Dell U3011 (30in) monitor run off Precision M6500/4500 notebook?

Thinking of getting a a Dell U3011 (30in) monitor and have it run off either a Dell Precision M6500 or M4500 notebook.

Does anyone know if this is possible or is it a dumb idea?

30" is a bit too much for my work space (24" at the moment) but why not?
