Hunt's AW Area51m

OK guys it's my turn to write a review!

First-The Wait

I only had to wait 5 days for my 51m to ship, including weekends, so I would surely give AW a plus for this. Maybe mine was a fluke, but still, they advertised 7 day and I got better than what they advertised. It can't get any better than that. The day of delivery I was at school so my mom signed for it. Man, that day went by sooooo slowly. I skipped lacrosse practice so that I could get as much time as possible with my new baby.

Second-The Unvieling

The box that the actual computer came in was, as many other people have said, very well secured and packaged overall. When my eyes first laid themselves upon the green beauty, I was mesmorized. I was not sure what to do. I thought about turning it on, but I didn't want the moment to be over. I ended up turning it on...

Performance SO Far

Well when I first turned it on it was incredibly fast compared to my old 1GHz ,128ram machine. I had to eat lunch so I popped in LOTR to view as I ate. I didn't see the PowerDVD shortcut so I tried playing the DVD with Media Player... BAD IDEA!!! I realized my mistake and then tried PowerDVD and it worked perfectly. I have the 15.4 inch with the 2 extra speakers and for a laptop it is pretty loud. I did benchmarks with 3dmark03 (that came free with my lappy so don't select it when you configure your machine)

both clocked at 100 engine and 200 memory
Nvidia go5700
3.0GHz with HT
512 DDR
7200RPM hard drive

3011 on Battery
3056 on AC

I thought these were pretty decent. i have since installed Starcraft, Warcraft3, Counter Strike and the original, yes the original, Unreal Tournament. All worked perfectly with all highest settings but they aren't very demanding games so...

Things i love-

The keyboard. No flex at all and the perfect pressure is needed to press the keys down. Big keys also.

The Screen. Very crisp and very clear. No ghosting at all and colors are very nice even without tweaking. Maybe my eyes are not as trained as some of you guys that say it is washed out, but I thought the colors were fine.

The Case and Color. Green is by far the best color It stands out and so far 5 people came up to me and complimented me on my laptop and that was only on one trip. Pictures will be posted soon. The pictures that i have seen have had the flash distort the real color of the Cyborg. It makes it look brighter than it really is. The case is very strong. No bending at all and very smooth. The only problem is that I think there should be two more USB's in the back. The mouse USB that I use is annoying because I usually hit it with the mouse.

The Alien Eyes. Who wouldn't love them? They change colors!!

The Remote. What an awesome gadget. You can do anything except play games with it! Well i guess you could try but prepare to be fragged...

Things i Don't Love-

As i said the USB's should be in a dif spot or some more should be added.

When I open the lid sometimes it creaks...not loud but it does. Maybe the beast needs oil?

The fact that the internal WiFi dos not work well. I have external and it works VERY well (NetGear 108 MBPS WG511T) but my friend has internal Linksys and it works just as well. I just wish I didnt have to unplug and replug the card everytime I put it in its case.

Sometimes the mouse and touchpad go CRAZY. The intellimouse 3.0 sometimes won't left click on anything but the start menu and task bar, sometimes left clicks are right clicks, and sometimes when using the touchpad the cursor will all of a sudden zip down about 3 inches.

XP Pro Automatically logs me on even when I have required a password to get on...

The Price. Simply stated.

OVERALL:

97/100

Why? because the goods drastically outweigh the bads. This thing is one beast of a machine that comes with hot looks and upgradable almost everything. The biggest thing that brought the score down was the price. The other things "I don't love" are minor and I can probably fix them once I get to know the machine better.

Pics coming soon to the Pictures thread. God Bless AlienWare!

Hear hear, Hunt!! Good review and I'm looking forward to writing a review myself. Well, I have to go to work, but I'll be back to make my full comments later! Peace out!

Most excellent brother!

Try uninstalling the Synaptic touch pad drivers. They will cause a conflict with the Intellimouse drivers.

Just wanted to give an fyi: Yes the touchpad will work "fine" if you disable those 2...but:
-If you disable synTPenh, you lose functioning of the scroll button
-If you disable synTPlr, when scrolling with the scroll button, you highlight text and click links that you don't want to click while websurfing
I leave them both on.

I thought I would have the same prob with the touchpad with my logitech mouse, But they both work fine. I had to uninstall both then reinstall the TP drivers first, then the logitech drivers. Unfortunately, the mouse drivers are overridden by the TP driver, but I have full funtionality of both...so I'm happy.

Question about how WCIII performs. That is the only computer game I own, along with Starcraft, I love both games, how does it perform? Let me know how it looks. Thanks.

Your review was well written as well, screw la crosse.

WC3 looks awesome with everything set to the highest. Very crisp details and buttery smoothness.

Starcraft is another story. It performs perfectly, but the graphics are a little fuzzy. I have tried different resolutions but to no avail. I do not know whats wrong. Maybe it has to do with the widescreen of the 15.4"?

Actually SC isn't really blurry it just isnt as nice as WC. This is not because of the computer is is because of the game's graphics. And one other note, if you edit your color profiles in PowerStrip, you must Alt-Tab WC so that the color profiles take effect in WC.

Powerstrip???

What is a powerstrip? My computer knowledge is....... greatly lacking =).
Powerstrip (aka AlienAdrenaline) is software used to control video/display settings. It also allows overclocking of the video card while under warranty. I highly recommend buying it, it's cheap insurance and helps get a little more performance outta your system.
