For some time now I've been frustrated to no end with just how slow my external USB 2 hard drives read and write. It had gotten to the point where I avoided necessary backups of priceless photos and videos. In short I stopped using my external drives for what I got them for because they were too slow and taking away too much of my time to perform a non-productive activity.
But all that is behind me now. I go myself a 2 TB Free Agent USB 3 hard drive, and it's just as fast as an internal one. Backups are quick, and I run most of my media projects straight off the external drive. Plus the connection to the external drive doesn't freeze after a perios of non-use like it does on my USB 2 drives.
In conclusion, if you do all your work on a laptop with limited storage like I do, give a USB 3 drive a try. You won't be sorry, especially since a 2 TB one can be had for under 200 bucks.
