The system is a brand new VPCEA490X with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, core i5 with Intel HD Graphics (not discrete).
HD video on the web plays great (e.g. HD video on Vimeo or similar) - but playing back a local MOV file (720p) that came from a Canon PowerShot point-n-shoot, either through Windows Live Photo Gallery or through Windows Media Player directly, is choppy (stutters might be another way to describe it). The audio is smooth and I did see it play back a few seconds smoothly but 99% of the time it seems to struggle to play the video smoothly.
The CPU also doesn't seem to be doing anything at the time so I'm presuming the GPU is correctly trying to do the decoding, it just isn't smooth.
Things I've tried:
It doesn't matter if it is on battery power or AC power.
I tried setting the advanced power options (in Windows) under the "Intel HD Graphics" section to "High Performance" when on "AC power" and that didn't seem to have an effect.
I tried updating the video driver (there was a small version difference and a more recent date of September 2010) but that didn't solve the issue either.
I tried to use drivers from Intel (dated end of February 2011) but they say they're not compatible with this system and to get the drivers from the computer manufacturer.
I don't really have any other local video files to determine if it is just those (e.g. the cause of the problem is the format?).
Any ideas?
