Asus doesn’t really have a tablet to proudly compete with the likes of the iPad, Motorola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab yet, but they’re working on it, and when it comes out ASUS CEO Jerry Shen wants everyone to know it’s going to push the envelope in some significant ways.

According to Shen, ASUS will launch a 3D tablet running a quad-core processor sometime in 2011. Although Shen refused to be drawn into a commitment to any particular quad-core chip, right now, there’s only one to really talk about : NVIDIA’s next iteration of Tegra, code-named Kal-El (after the last son of Krypton), which will offer five times the performance over Tegra 2, as well as the ability to stream videos that are twice the resolution of 1080p.

Given the horsepower of Kal-El, a 3D tablet wouldn’t be too hard to manage: Kal-El certainly has the power to draw every on-screen element twice, once for each eye. In fact, Shen says a quad-core CPU is integral to their plans and is absolutely essential for smooth 3D video playback at 1080p resolution.

Overall, Shen says that ASUS intends on being the second largest player in tablets by the end of 2012, hoping to have a five to eight percent marketshare by then. That seems rather naively ambitious given the iPad’s total domination of the tablet market, but a lot will rest upon ASUS’s ability to undercut the iPad in price.

As for smartphones, ASUS says they’ll be sticking with Android for 2011, but they might consider Windows Phone 7 in 2012 after the impact of Microsoft’s partnership with beleaguered Finnish mobile giant Nokia was a bit more clear.

2011 looks like it’ll be a make-or-break year for ASUS. Netbooks are dead in the water, yet ASUS has built their entire business on netbooks’ back for the last few years. Can they successfully transition to the post-PC age, or will they be left behind?
