scan and fix drive

every time i plug in something by usb, i get a message about scanning the device, and checking for problems. how do i stop this from popping up every time i plug in a device?

Well it depends on the usb drive- if the OS does not recognize the format coming from the device it will flag and brings up the message. I suggest that you either reformat the drive from the external device or reformat it once within the OS - and try again; back up your data first.
