Big Fat Clown - What's your monitor?
There are tons of links on this great forum that will help you.

As for me, I have light leakage (I have the Hitachi) and I have the 9700 - 128 RAM - clean XP SP1 with non-ATI drivers.
My 3d Mark was high 3,000s (like 3800 or 3900).

Read on the forums - everyone complained about the hitachi monitors at the 1600 resolution (wsxga+) - and the samsungs are better.

I have had my laptop for close to 2 weeks - getting no where with tech support on the phone (MANY calls) so I just decided for UPS to pick it up and order another one. It's a pain, but if you're spending $2k on a machine and some of them are 'perfect', why shouldn't mine?

Anyway, sorry for the digression!
Dave

BFC, yes I do have a small amount of light at the bottom, as you say, it is only noticable during boot up when the screen is all black. Go into a computer store and check out some of the laptops there, they all have it to some degree, in the scheme of things the Dell's I have seen are better than most other brands.

Does it bother you during normal use? or can you even notice it? My advice is not to get too worked up about it if you can't even notice it during normal use.

If you had dead pixels on the other hand, send it back straight away, I wouldn't accept that.

I have a Samsung WSXGA+ screen. The leakage is about 1" from the bottom and it bothers me when im watching DVD's or playing games with black background. Hey $3000 cnd is a lot of $$$ and @ that price, it should be better. I called Dell this morning and they will send me a replacement unit.

BFC, I am waiting for my third screen (second machine) first one had very little light leakage but had a small imperfection on the screen. The replacement display was dead pixel free but had more light leakage with more at the top this time. Looks like spot lights pointing on the screen. I don't notice it when using the PC for general computing, but DVD's and gaming yes. It was installed by a service tech... and I think he could have been a bit more careful in the way he handled the LCD part as he installed it. That may have contributed to the extra light leakage... not sure.

Anyway... I opted for a total unit replacement. Should be here in a few days. Hoping for the best.

The first two screens where WSXGA+ Samsungs. The third one should be too.

You did the right thing in returning it. Good luck on the replacement.

BTW - Go Flames Go!!

I agree with SD, if it is annoying you through normal use then by all means replace it. I have a small amount of light at the bottom of the screen, but I can only see it during start up, I never notice it any other time so it doesn't bother me.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a screen with absolutely NO light leakage, I am interested because every laptop I have looked at (incuding several other brands) has a small amount, mainly noticable during start up.

I have no light leakage on my C840 (= I8200), but this is former generation of UltraSharp UXGA (1600x1200), which actually may be better in some aspects than the current wide screens.
yea my sharp on my 8200 was absolutely flawless but when i got a samsung as a replacement it had light leakage all over the place
post #49 of 58
Yes, I should have added that my C840 has the Sharp screen. The specified contrast ratio, response time and viewing angles for UltraSharp UXGA were slightly better than those for the current WUXGA. I will be ordering M60 with WUXGA soon, so I'm a bit worried about possible quality degradation.

I installed and ran the Omega drivers on my 9100. I did everything Stu said except delete the Dell directory. Is that ok? The install program warned me to delete the control panel first and informed me how to do it so I did. Did I do enough or should I search out the directory and do that too?
Anyone?
The presence of directories with other driver versions only matters when you are installing a new driver (since you wouldn't like Windows to install a driver from a "wrong" directory). Afterwards, you may delete what you wish without changing your current driver's operation.
Exactly, the reason I specify to delete those existing driver directories is to stop Windows automatically detecting and installing those old drivers upon reboot after uninstalling. If it didn't do that and you were able to go on and install the new drivers then it doesn't make a lick of difference. Good luck.

So if the Omega drivers and Catalyst Control panel installed then I'm good to go? There aren't any conflicts are there? FWIW, I do seem to see a bit of improvement in performance in UT2004. And I gotta tell you, this WUXGA screen is amazing. I can run the game at a lower resolution without any loss that I can see of crispness in the image quality, which I heard was a problem in LCDs. I guess this explains why Dell would decide to equip their XPS notebooks w/ this screen exclusively.

Omega drivers ? for what?
Omega drivers are for the Video card, in place of the Dell drivers which are not up to that standard. www.omegacorner.com.
