Should I repair or get a new one?

Okay, I have a Dell Inspirion 2200, but the hard drive went out, literally just as the power jack got replaced (I'm not sure if it happened WHEN it got replaced, but it's out), and I'll have to pay forty-five dollars to get a new hard drive for it. It's a 2005 model, so it's old, but the casing got replaced, so it doesn't look that old.

Anyways, should I replace the laptop with a new one, or should I keep fixing it whenever it screws up? I don't have much money, but I'm sure my parents will help pay for whatever I pick out, and I've been dying to get Windows 7 or a modern Linux OS anyways. What do y'all think? And what specs should I get or shouldn't I get? Anything that's out on the market and tempting to laptop buyers, but I should NEVER get? (I don't care about Blu-Ray or webcam)

Or maybe I could even build my own laptop? Since I want at least a TB hard drive and the Sandy Bridge chip with minimal cost.

Get a new one if you believe that you can benefit from the new technology (ha ha ha) or just replace the drive and keep being happy with what it can do for you at the moment, supporting what you need.

Other than that, current Sandy Bridge models can be very well lasting for anyone for a long time to come.

cheers ...

Wow, I haven't heard of the next gen chips, but the evaluation on CNet... amazing. They far exceed the current ones. What should I know about where and what to look for to find what laptops have them? (Remember, I just found out about them)
