3880-V dead PSU - how can I fix, aside from replacing the motherboard?

I came into the possession of a (vintage?) NP3880-V from a friend who bought it circa 2004-2005. I'd like to use it as a mobile server of sorts, given that it's got a low power processor and just enough RAM for my purposes (Minecraft, etc.).

However, it doesn't boot. When I plug in the power supply (on which a light illuminates, telling me that it's likely working), I see no lights indicating that the battery is charging. It should still power on even if the battery is removed, and battery life doesn't matter to me.

Is there a way I can further troubleshoot the problem without having to likely pay Sager (or PCTorque or any others) lots of money to fix this ancient machine? I'd rather not junk it, especially if it's something I could fix myself. I'm not afraid of soldering, although I've not done much of it in my day.

Worst case scenario, I part it out, I guess.

Any help is appreciated, especially if you've got a spare NP3880-V and live in the Pittsburgh area and wouldn't mind lending me your motherboard for a weekend ;-)

Not sure if you can remove the GPU on this model. if not just try baking the whole board.

cheers ...

...what?

Can you provide details or perhaps a link to a tutorial? This would be the first time I've heard of baking a motherboard with the intention of anything other than melting it.

Search the Dell section for bake / baking - we have many personal tips and instruction as how to proceed. The main purpose is to reflow the GPU connection. Some rather use a heat gun directly over it, some choose the oven (like I did / do) Good luck.

cheers ...
