My little ACER is having issues

Thread Starter

Sooooo, A few months back I was screwing around with SD adapter and starting up my acer netbook at the same time and bango!  Now everything has gone hay-wire.

If I try to start it I get a screen that says "no bootable device --insert boot disk.  Yada, yada.  So the guys at computer shop ask me if I have the recovery cds?  Of course I don't so contact acer and place and order for the system disc and the two recovery cds.  I also by the way have the original xp disc with key.

After two weeks I finally get all the discs so I definitely feel that I have what I need to get things back up and running.

Before starting I installed a new 160gb hard drive because the guys down at the shop ran some tests and said the old one was bad?  Anyway, I tried everything on both HDs and both fail the same way.  I also selected the acer to boot from external cd drive in F2 menu.

1) I insert the system disc

2) Run through prompts

3) I say yes to doing a fresh install which wipes everything clean on C drive

4) Then I get two empty progress bars that just sit and do nothing.  Both bars stay at 0%.  Then after 20 seconds or so I am prompted to insert the recovery disc one.  But wait,  both progress bars are still empty??

5) I insert recovery one disc and nothing.......

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Also when I try doing anything with my xp disc I get the blue screen which tells me that a major error has occurred and windows needs to shut down?

Thanks

Ouch - You can try resetting the CMOS battery but I have a bad feeling that the controller on board is fried sad.gif

I would reformat the hard drive manually before installing the OS. Formating and INstalling an OS from a disc can lead to issues like this in my experience.

All that's over my head. I guess I'm screwed. Thanks though

It's not that difficult. We can help walk you through it.

Ok, so what should I do first?  Actually I never really expected to help from anyone.  Thanks

Can I reformat from somewhere in the bios....because that's the only functional thing I have going right now.  Man, you all are so much more helpful than the dudes at the computer repair shop. They want big bucks.  More than the computer is worth.

Well first I need to know what model Acer you have and if it has a floppy drive or not. That will determine the ease of using fdisk. (the easiest way to format a hard drive)

Also, when you step through the recovery process, are you using the Acer recovery CDs or the Windows XP CD?

Actually I have them all.  The System Disc for this model, both recovery discs 1 & 2 and the XP CD.

Okay so no floppy.

What happens when you boot from the XP CD?

I get a blue screen that runs though a bunch of prompts/settings at the bottom and then end up on a blue screen that says, "a problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

So it doesn't give you an option to format from the CD? It fails before it allows you to choose options?

That's it. Just a message on a blue screen.

Ok, It's possible your hard drive is damaged.

Would you be willing to replace it?

The one that's in there now is brand new. The computer shop guys said that my old one was bad.

All I did was take the new 160gb out of the package and install it.
