A burst of activity in the middle of the Milky Way
Researchers detect the brightest flare ever observed in our galaxy’s black hole.

As black holes go, Sagittarius A* is relatively low-key. The black hole at the center of our galaxy emits very little energy for its size, giving off roughly as much energy as the sun, even though it is 4 billion times as massive.

However, astronomers have observed that nearly once a day, the black hole rouses to action, emitting a brief burst of light before settling back down. It’s unclear what causes such flare-ups, and scientists have sought to characterize these periodic bursts in order to better understand how black holes evolve.

Now a team of scientists from MIT, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Michigan and elsewhere have used NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory to detect the brightest flare ever observed from Sagittarius A*. The flare, recorded 26,000 light years away, is 150 times brighter than the black hole’s normal luminosity. Scientists observed the flare for more than one hour before it faded away. This brief burst of activity, they say, may be a clue to how mature black holes like Sagittarius A* behave.

“We’re learning what black holes do when they’re old,” says Joey Neilsen, a postdoc at MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. “They’re no young whippersnappers like quasars, but they’re still active, and how they’re active is an interesting question.”

Neilsen and his colleagues published their results recently in The Astrophysical Journal.

nah, that is our Huddler host stupidity, nothing to do with your Android device(s). They break things all the time with every update laugh4.gif They even give me hard time now and then with my iPad tongue.gif

Some member mentioned that the latest Opera Mini seems to work well here on the Android device.

i have this stupid wish to have most of my bookmarks and whatnot synced cross-platform, so i've got Chrome installed on all devices except my work computer - and i have to say, Chrome on Android makes me feel about as happy as when i step into a dog turd on the street in eppendorf when i walk without looking down... less than ideal, in other words...

i might give opera mini a try, i tried opera back in the day on my alienware during the pinnacle of XP. over 5 years ago now...

not sure what to install on my lappy once it comes back - had chrome on that too but it's not x64 - not entirely sure what benefits i myself get from that, need to read up on how x64 helps browsing...

OT = Off Topics ... it is a crazy area here in the forum wink.gif

I use Firefox Nightly since the dawn of time, tried everything in the past ... Don't like Chrome due to Google pushy data collection, stopped Opera after they went beyond 9.7

So at the moment, Firefox for Windows and Safari for OSX for me. Stock browser on my Galaxy SII and iPhone
