I spent a few hours yesterday on this monstrosity, and I thought I would warn anyone who is in need of replacing the LCD on a DV5 with the "flush glass" feature.
The issue is that the whole thing is held together by ...double sided foam tape.
This is one where removing the screen assembly from the laptop makes things much easier. Removing the hidden screws allows you to pop off the back lcd cover. This is where the fun begins.
The flush plastic cover is actually just taped down to the bezel, but is also taped to the screen. I had to carefully pull out a little at at time cutting the tape to get the screen/cover assembly off the bezel.
Now that was done, I had to cut the cover off the screen. Next step is getting all the old tape off! I used elbow grease and WD40 to clean off the tape and leftover adhesive. What a pain!
After all that was done, I reassembled everything (except the cover) and verified it worked. I also noticed during this the hinges are not that strong..it seems to me the cover is actually used for additional structure on the lid.
I had to run down and buy some double-sided tape to get the cover back on. I got some 3M heavy duty tape that was as thin as I could find. I then put the tape on the cover, cutting to fit and making holes for the webcam like it was originally. Finally able to reattach the cover the tape wasn't perfect, and it stuck out every so slightly.
But it was back together with a good screen. I found a few LCD lid assemblies on ebay. I would go that way in the future.
Ugh.
