I currently have two computers (both running XP Pro) connected to my router. When sharing files, I could only add local users to the list of users allowed to access the shared folders. This turned out to be fine, as when I connect to computer A using computer B, a dialog appears asking me for a user name and password. There I could enter a user that is local to the remote computer, and therefore could access the shared files. Strangly enough, when I try to connect to computer B using computer A, no dialog box appears. So when I try to open the shared folders, I am denied access. I cannot find any settings that are different on the two computers. Yet for one I am prompted to login and for the other I am not. Why is this happening? Or perhaps there is a better way to set up permissions for shared files?

Normally your system uses NT authentication. So if you have the same account on different systems, with different passwords you will get access denied. If there is not an account then you should be prompted for a username and password. If you have the exact account on both systems with the same password then you should not have a problem. You have to be logged in as the user with the account on both systems.

If you still have problems then also look at enabling simple file sharing, and enabling the guest account, with write permissions for your particular shared directory.

I see...so that's how NT authentication works. The weird thing is, I have different user names and different passwords on both systems, (Computer A has username1, Computer B has username2), both with simple file sharing disabled, and the permissions for the shared folders are for just the one user on the local system. As you said, and as I would expect, I am prompted for a password when I try to connect to computer A using computer B. But not vice versa...could there be a setting that I overlooked? Or perhaps it is just a bug?
