Acer Extensa 5420 will not power up

I have an Acer Extensa 5420 that is refusing to power up. When connected to the AC adapter or on battery, the power button lights up, and the HDD light flashes 3 times, goes out for about 3 seconds, flashes 3 times again, then everything shuts off. The screen remains black the entire time. The charging indicator on the front lights up, and the DVD drive indicator lights up and I can hear the optical drive try to spin up. Any help would be appreciated. So far, I have re-seated the RAM, CPU, and HDD. The HDD is functioning, as I attached it to another computer as an external drive and was able to see it and access it just fine.

Have you tried a hard reset...unplug the computer from a/c...remove the battery...press the power button for 30 secs- 1 min.....put battery back in, plug back into a/c and try powering it up...more than likely a power circuit issue

Tried that, but not for that length of time. I will definitely try this out. Thank you for you advice.

OK, I tried doing a hard reset, and still the same problem. I am beginning to think that I might have a very bad problem here.

Do you have any way of checking to make sure the adapter is putting out the required voltage...I assume this is the original adapter...if it is not and is a substitue, is it generating the exact same voltage/amperage as the original...as some listed as compatible really are not....have you gently tried wiggling the dc jack which plugs into the laptop...sometime because of abuse ie pulled out because someone tripped over the wire and yanked it out, the circuit board inside the laptop becomes damaged (broken solder joint or worse) and will not charge or receive power from the adapter

Steps to try.

1. try to remove the memory and check to see if the slots are dirty, if they are clean them with some rubbing alcohol. Then reinstall one stick of memory at a time and check each one in each slot. You are checked to see if you have a bad stick and or a back memory socket.

2. You said you have tried to reset the CPU and that did not work. CPUs in laptop do not go bad all that often unless you do overclocking and them you might see if you can pick up a cheap replacement on ebay or something (if you need help with a part number let me know)

3. The ONLY other thing that is can really cause this is video chip issues which is repaired by replacing the motherboard. I know the Acer 5100 has some serious problems with the video chip.

Hope this helps
