Does it work? Yes, I've done it myself. The problem is that the 6800 ultra heatsink doesn't fit properly in the laptop. The second heatpipe (the one that extends to the left) does not have the same curvature on the 6800 go ultra as it does on any of the XPS M1710 video cards. This means that you either have to replace the 6800 go ultra heatsink with a single pipe heatsink from a 6800 go or you have to replace it with either a single or dual pipe heatsink from any of the M1710 video cards. Regardless, your card will most likely not cool as well as it did with its original heatsink. If you do replace the heatsink then you may have to realign the purple thermal pads that cool the GPU's memory.

I've also heard of a guy bending the second 6800 go ultra heatpipe so that it would fit. I did not try this because I didn't want to potentially screw up my heatsink and also I was only temporarily testing the swap before I put the 6800 go ultra back in my XPS2 (same as XPS M170).

All in all, I'd say this is a fairly simple mod that may prevent you from gaming on the machine depending on how high the GPU temperatures go.

yeah it was a while before anybody responded got it to pop in just had to use a little leverage to strech the other heatpipe and cooling fin assembly into place but it seated down. but chicked out on trying to power it up. didn't want to burn up a good card if it wasn't electrically compatitable. although it seemed like both heatpipe cooling fin assemblies just didn't quite fit right. the one that goes above the cpu seemed tight too . and it poped in first. oh well fit have to try again to see if I can get that XPS M1710 to post would be nice. got several laptop projecs working several real close to being done. thanks for the info though thought it might be electrically complatible just had to know for sure though didn't want to burn up that vid cardin a prefectly good working XPS M170 .   so again thanks for the info.
