Aspire 5100 - install OS on different hard drive problems

Hi
I have my friend's four year old Aspire 5100. I set this system up for her originally and created the recovery DVDs.

It's original hard drive is having signficant problems, taking about 20 minutes to boot up. CHKDSK found many errors.

I've installed the nevv hard drive and on trying to get the recovery files to run, they crash and literally povver dovvn the system.

It gets through the RAM drive setup and to the language selection screen and then it crashes.

I couldn't find anything relevant on Acer's support site or on this forum and hope that someone here can help me get the VVIN XP Media Center OS installed successfully.

Thanks in advance.

most likely it is not the hard drive that is the issue. The 5100 is notorious for failing due to a southbridge issue. Of course, the hard drive controller is located on the southbridge which is why you are seeing these issues. Try applying pressure to the uppercase just to the left of the touchpad. If the unit boots a bit further next time then you know that this is the issue. The 5100 southbridge likes to heat up and slowly de-solder itself from the mainboard.

If that is the case, you will be looking at mainboard replacement or repair.
