Upgrading a 7700 CPU

I just finished installing yet another motherboard in this (third one since I bought it in 2005, and much of those years were spent just not bothering with it) and if possible I would like to upgrade the CPU one of these days and get some more performance. I'm looking through Newegg and they have many socket 775s available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=775+processor&x=0&y=0

Currently I'm running the P4 3.0 ghz so even a moderate improvement would probably be worth the expense, but I'm wondering just how far it can go. Would this thing run on a dual or quad core? I'm concerned there may be indiscreet power restrictions, incompatibility with an outdated motherboard/BIOS, or something else that will prevent me from upgrading.

Pure P4 3.0GHz is quite a work horse. I would not bother with moving to dual core or whatsoever. My 2 cents.

It's not bad, and works well for Corel's art programs which is my primary use. But I would like to keep up on games for a little longer if possible.

New games rely on GPU more than anything else at the moment, your P4 is still top of the line in CPU arena as far as gaming concerns

That's not entirely true--most games have dual cores as minimum system requirements now days. I know my CPU has become a bottleneck in a few games like Arkham Asylum. And even by P4 standards, 3.0 ghz is low. I know Alienware offered faster speeds like 3.6. I just passed one of them last night on eBay because again I'm wondering if I could buy one from Newegg that isn't used and isn't five years old.
