Dell XPS M1710 - Still Viable Option for Budget Gaming Laptop (SC2, WOW, L4D2)?????

Thread Starter
So my friend plays SC2, Left 4 Dead 2, and WOW pretty frequently (still considers himself a casual gamer though)
Locally, I found a Dell M1710 in pretty good condition for a very good price (lets say around $200). I used to have an M170 years (and about 10 computers ago), which I absolutely LOVED, especially the screen (still to this day miss it on my new X220). smile.gif

Anyway, his laptop is very very slow and "laggy", even after a clean W7 Ent. install.

--It is an HP DV9000
--Turion TL-56 (1.7ghz dual core, I think)
--3gb ddr2 of ram
--Nvidia graphics (I think it is a "7600 Go", but I am not 100% positive)
--and 5400rpm drive
--Crappy 17" screen

I found a great deal locally but I am wondering if it will be faster than his current computer. Would a Dell M1710 be a worthwhile upgrade for him on a very tight college budget? He can snag it for $200, with a shot battery ($40 for a replacement), and the DC jack might be loose (probably also an easy fix to re-solder a new DC jack on myself, $5 and a few hrs). ph34r.gif

--2.0 GHz Dual-Core T7200 Intel Processor (core 2 duo)
--17” Display, max resolution 1920 x 1200 (Widescreen)
--2 GB DDR2 RAM
--256MB Nvidia GeForce 7900GS Graphics Card
--120GB HDD 7200rpm

The ram can transfer over (3gb), and the hdd is faster (the DV9000 is ATA I think). The screen alone IMO is worth the upgrade, but he is worried that it wont be any faster during gaming.

What do you guys think? Worth it or not?? blushing.gif

I would appreciate any advice, I want to try to email the guy about it ASAP so I dont miss out on it!!
I am not really sure about that hardware, that Is about the time I got out of the laptop game for photography (right when celeron died and memrom dropped), so Im not really sure how good the hardware is. It is a a Core 2 Duo though, NOT a Core Duo which I remember being a considerable bit faster but I might be wrong.

Plz halp! blushing.gif

I like the upgrade. Better CPU, RAM can be upgraded. And the hard drive is much better and can also be upgraded. Small upgrades like SSD and RAm can do wonders for old machines.
