Toshiba satellite 1400 Wireless

I know where the wireless card should be...have checked the area and no card is present..It was apparently an option on this model..do these old laptops generally come with the wifi antenna built in or is that probably missing as well...anyone who has had one of these apart, where is the wifi antenna located if there is one...I have the disassembly instructions for a 1405 and no mention of the wireless antenna or location...I also have in my possession, two wireless PC cards which I got in a load of stuff a while back
One is a EZ Connect Wireless by SMC Mod SMC 2632W...Are these just plug and play..The other apparently appears to be a generic PC card just says " 802.11 b/g Wireless PC card...they must have their own built in antenna in them, right...The person I got it from cant find the adapter cord so went online and got the 15V 4a 60W cord...specs of adapter size are printed on bottom of laptop, so no guess work..lol. So just waiting for the powercord before I start with this thing

Hmm. I don't know of any notebook that has it soldered to the motherboard. Are you trying to replace it?

No, actually just trying to figure out the best way to go...the laptop doesnt have the mini wireless card so was wondering if there may already be an antenna strung in the note book..then just would have to buy or get a mini wireless card...if the antenna isnt there, then maybe best to go with the PCMCIA cards that I have in lieu of the built in chip..(that is if they work)..thats why I was wondering if the PCMCIA cards were pretty much plug and play...would imagine I would have to try and find a driver but if I recall, I tried once before and couldnt find anything..the 1400 was running XP..I do have the recovery disks and was planning on using them and going back to square one...

I read that sometimes they stick the wifi antennas in the LCD bezel.

Yeah, I dont think they did in this case, as there are no wires in the Mini card slot area...if it was pre-rigged with an antenna, I am sure the antenna wire connector which looks like a black and white wire in the disassembly instructions, would be visible..by the way, where is Q these days???

Update: I never ever got either one of the PCMCIA wireless cards to work...I did invest a very few bucks and purchased a Wireless chip and antenna for a Toshiba Satellite 1400..(it was a Broadcom chip)...While I was running Puppy Linux, that OS was able to see the Broadcom chip but I couldnt get it to connect...yesterday, I finally got the restore cds to work so it now has WinXP SP3 loaded...there is no listing of a wireless in the device manager nor is there an option in Networking to connect with a wireless...This must have been the crossover model Satellite 1400 PS140C-03DP07) as it comes with an Infrared port...it does however have a wireless access panel....but no antenna.. it also has the special function key F8 with the wireless symbol..gave Fn F8 a shot and nothing there either...Tried third party wireless connection software and the only option given was LAN , wireless was greyed out as was the scan for a wireless network buttton...Networking in the Control panel has no wireless connection option either...Any way to force this, or am I beating a dead horse...any other suggestions

OK, starting to play around with this again...been all over the net looking for a driver for a Broadcom BCM4318KFBG wireless mini PCI module that is supposedly the one that came with a Toshiba Satellite 1400 (probably the US model) as none of the two CDN models has wireless..The mini pci card is installed in the wireless slot..I have not as yet installed the antenna but wanted to get the driver installed for this module first..I find it listed all over the place, but when you follow the link, you end up at places like "DriverDoctor" etc who want you to buy their download and scanning software...anyone out there find this driver for me or know where I might be able to get it...Thanks

Nah, seen that one and like others, if you follow it thru, takes you to a pay for use site

pm me your personal email address Gene. I have a copy of the BCM4306 driver that might (hopefully) work with your card. Huddler is a pain to load up files other than pics

Update...tried the taping of pin 13 in the mini pci card and no luck...in network connections, the only option I have is LAN no wireless LAN...seemed to remember that Linux seen the wireless card and seen my wireless network, so tried a bootable copy of Puppy Linux and sure enough..Puppy seen the wireless card and it also seen my network..typed in the password and wireless works like a charm in Linux...but, in XP, the wireless is not even recognized nor are there any options to connect to a wireless net
The info I was able to get off of Puppy was:
Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 (Airforce One 54g) 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 2)
However, when I open Control Panel >System>Device Manager, I have a yellow question mark beside
Other Devices, and when that is opened, there is a yellow question mark beside Network Controller
When I look at the Network Controller Properties,
Driver provider -unknown
Driver date - not avail
driver ver- not avail
digital signer- not digitally signed
When I let XP update the driver
I get, the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the software.

Any suggestions

Yeh looks like you still need to find a driver that will work well with linux on the BCM4318.

Edit: sorry, just looked at your sig, and you're trying to put it on winxp.

I'm sure you've google this, but can you let us know all that you've tried.

Steve; To tell you the truth, I have tried so many off and on I cant remember which ones I did/didnt try...I was sure that I tried that one but tried again anyhow..still no go
I really hate those sites like SoftPedia because they have so much junk on those pages its hard to figure out sometimes which is the legit download spot without downloading somestupid
thing like driver detective or hardware finder etc

Understood.

I think I have a torrent site somewhere that hosts drivers somewhere. I'll see if i can find it.

okay dokay winknudge.gif Let me know, we have a few more to try.

Funny that from the start Linux was the platform that had issue with this card, due to "missing" driver. Now it is the other way around laugh4.gif
