I just took my 6810 apart again to install a PC3200 256meg module in the hidden inner slot, I had tried 2 gig total previously, then 1.5gig, both pc3200 attempts, never did 2gig or 1.5gig with the pc2700 stuff, never could get the mother to stay running with either pc3200 combo (yes, i used the 'guide'), so I snagged a 256meg pc3200 module and went the stock route just like with the 1.25gig pc2700 that the machine came with, now running smoothly with 1.25gig PC3200...anyhoot, on to the main reason for the postage...
Screen flicker fix, very simple, but one still has to remove bezel, and that was real easy too....whenever I noticed the screen flicker I could make it disappear by wiggling the LCD back and forth, hmm....I had worked on it before, but only the MB connector end, not the end under the LCD bezel,,,
Now I know the guide sez to crimp the wires down on the clip to the strip controller behind the lower bezel and to use hot glue to secure the feed wire from the MB to the LCD screen...bleh, and awful lot of work that more than likely is not necessary....once bezel is removed, make sure the two plugs are inserted properly, the other is at the end and goes directly to the LCD screen, it can be secured with a strip of the chrome tape too...then the next thing you do is very simple, no hot glue involved...
Get some chrome (metal) heating duct tape, this stuff is incredibly sticky and really flexable so it can be shaped into weird spots, you can use it to remove hair like a wax JOB if it gets stuck to arm hair (try it if u don't believe me, lol), now cut it in thin strips, maybe 1/4" wide and use it where the hot glue is supposed to go, you can cut it to precise lengths once one end is stuck, I used three strips and a 'mini' flathead screwdriver to make sure the wire was VERY securely attached, the flathead did the trick of tightening the tape down, wire movage problem solved, flicker gone, gone, gone, the flicker persay is not caused by a 'loose' connector, but by the movement of the wire when the laptop is opened and the loose wire from the MB causing the plug to move on the controller strip.... once secured there is no need to fool with crimping wires and making sure they are in the connector properly again...with both end wires taped in place, absolutely no movement, no flicker, kapish? just the thought of removing, crimping, reinserting the really, really small wires in the SAME order and making sure none of the wires popped when the clip was inserted again was just not appealing to me.....
Total time to do EVERYTHING, including the mems replacement, removing bezel, tightening hinge screws, applying tape, about 25 minutes, if you have never taken one apart, it will take longer.....
Now the unit is pristine again, runs XP Pro faster than shieet, has never had cracked hinges, looks like new, 7200rpm HD, 4000+ CPU....
Gonna keep it for backup, got a new HP dual core lappy 2 months ago with Win7 and 8gig of mems, the 6810 still dusts it for boot time and normal desktop cruising, sometimes newer is not faster for day to day shieet, not saying the HP is bad, just sayin', LOL..
Did I mention the screen flicker is gone, flew the coop, outta here, lol....
Laterzzzz........
