Asus M50s Video Card Problem/Question

Thread Starter

I`ve had my Asus M50s laptop for two years or so and so far all I have is praise for it. Yesterday, however, after playing Homefront, I quit the game and put it in stand-by then powered it back up after 30 or so mintues. It seemed to boot just fine but the screen wouldn`t start. I though that closing the lid for a few years may have disconnected some wires or something so i connected my PC monitor to it via an HDMI cable and after that didn`t work I tried the good old DVI and no signal was sent to the monitor that way either. I did some research and asked a specialist and he said that the video card is gone and i need a new one. I browsed the net and i found a 9650m GT refurbished video card at a decent price but I`ve also been told that when it comes to notebooks, anything other that the card it came with will not be supported by the BIOS or something and given the fact that the old card was a 9600M GS I`m quite doubtful the higher performance one will work(even though I`m starting to need it in the latest released games).

To sum up: Can I swap my old 9600M GS for a better video card such as a 9650M GT or maybe even a 9800 if i can find one?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Most notebook video cards cannot be upgraded. The only exceptions to this are cards using the MXM standard, which are designed to be able to be upgraded and cards designed for the same model computer and motherboard. Unfortunately, I do not believe the M50 series falls into either of these categories. You're most likely going to need a replacement card from Asus.

Greetings

As I've answered to someone from forum board before. Here it goes answer for your question.

Its possible to fix it. If you would like to be fixed you can contact us. All what we do is that we replace the chip for new models ( Data Code 2009 / 2010 / 2011 ) which ones have the " new bumpers " between the IC Chip and the pcb base of the chip. Also we use a leaded solder balls which do not oxidate , so your graphic card won't get break anymore. As a proof of replacement we give back the old chip.

About of the card replacement.

As long as it is MXM II slot card, you might try to swap it for different one. Before you will do it, all you have to do is to make sure the graphic card BIOS is on the pcb itself, and its not shared with motherboard bios. Also when you will be looking for different card, you have to make sure that the cooling system will fit and either bios is located on pcb of graphic card. I suggest that you should be looking for same model, but if its used not brand-new one it may fail again in short time.

If it will be possible to swap card for different one, I suggest to look for at last 9800 or 9600GT since all of the older models mostly series 6xxx-9600 has the " bad bumpers " between the IC core and pcb base of the chip, and its breaking down after some time. Time and the temperature boost the process of the oxidation solder balls under the chip either.
