This early range did not come with the protect smart configuration, so all the cable on ebay seem not to suit this model_? where could i get one online, or which cable suits this model, can it even handle extra hard drives_?

Notebook computers do not use hard drive cables - they have a connector that is directly attached to the motherboard. So I do not understand what you are asking about.

Some notebooks were not designed to directly attach a HDD and need a special adaptor.

Sorry to say your are wrong Djembe.  I just received my new HP DV7-QE laptop this week and went to install a SSD drive and found that both HDDs are connected by cables. And there was not a cable for the 2nd Bay drive.  Bay 1 has the main HDD connected by cable.

Bay 1 has a short cable from the HDD to a connector.

Bay 2 has a long cable from the HDD to a 2nd connector.

The cable is available from HP.com for $47.50 + shipping.  That is a huge ripoff in my opinion.

Tried finding alternates and only have come up with this one for $28.95 + $6.90 shipping:

Hope this helps somebody.

Merry Christmas to all!

Huh. I guess I learned something new today! All the notebooks I've taken apart have had a direct connector and not used cables. Guess I need to get out more! laugh4.gif

Djembe, I am really surprised myself that it wasn't a hard connection like MOST laptops have been up to now.  Guess things are changing.

(oh and I love your profile photo of the kid with the Christmas Lights)

I received my cable from Newmodeus about a week ago and it works like a charm.  Still think it's soo expensive but at least I got it for less than HP's price.

I now have a SSD 120GB in bay 1, and I moved my 750GB HDD to bay 2.  I used the Recovery Discs I created to put the files back on the SSD Drive.  It didn't work right the first time but I tried the Recovery again and it took.

I then wiped the 750GB HDD and I am going to use it to store my docs, photos, music, etc.  The computer boots up in less than 15 secs right now but that is with mostly the factory installed stuff with some un-installed junk softwares.  I am sure it will be slower once I get it where I want it.
