Gaming on Mac

Now before you immediately say "If you're gaming dont get a Mac" hear me out...

I am mostly going to be using the laptop for school, video editing, music editing, and photo editing. The gaming I would be doing is for non-FPS titles like Portal 1&2, Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3(when it comes out).

I just want to know what your experiences have been gaming on a Mac using the Mac OS. I know that you can always install bootcamp and run windows games but I'd rather not do that.

alright now how does this translate to a MBP 15 with these specs:

MacBook Pro 2.3GHz quad-core Intel i7

15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Hi-Res antiglare widescreen display, 1680-by-1050 resolution
4GB (2 x 2GB) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
750GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm
8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Intel HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6750M

It's a decent system for gaming, the article stated that one can supercharge the model in question - I take it with a better GPU at configuration upgrade.

You must have a bit of patience with Apple, they are working hard with games developers to improve the graphic drivers in order to tackle the gaming part of the devices.

cheers ...

yeah i have noticed that they are making steps in the right direction. i'm just concerned that if i make the purchase soon then ill regret it later because even though a Mac version of Diablo 3 is to be released it may not run so well on the current gen MBP

Discuss with them in stores. But this would be no different with non-Apple machines. Future new games might not run so well on current machines

I game on my MacBook Pro. I have last years' version and Portal 2 plays great. And I hop over to Windows where I have Mass Effect 1 and 2 which both play at highest settings, FarCry which plays at highest settings, Dead Space and BioShock 1 and 2 as well.

the drivers on games for mac can suck some times, but the mac makes up for it with sheer power.

I have an older macbook pro, the first of the unibody. I can play games on high settings still and the newest games on medium settings.

My friend got the new AMD/ATI powered macbook, it really hauls, you really don't have to worry about the performance. He has virtual machined windows, ran a game and still got higher performance then other performance laptops.

I was never a big PC gamer.  The only PC game I ever played was Star Craft, blizzard releases all of its games for mac, and now there is steam for mac, I got Portal and Team Fortress 2 for free so I have been enjoying those.  You could also play onlive on a mac.  So I haven't found much of a limitation on gaming for a mac now.

are you using a 13in macbook pro? because that is not really a pro, it was just a macbook with a backlite keyboard, 2 more gigs of RAM, and that was pretty much it.  Most people bought it just for the look over the macbook.
