I spoke to a Dell connection I have regarding the official support / launch of the 485M and they informed me that the reason it has not been added to the line and been officially support was not because of thermals or technical problems but because of the marketing department stonewalling it.

He informed me that if we make a post on the Dell Ideastorm and it gets alot of hype and activity that is the best way for marketing consider it.

So we have made a post and we need anyone that is genuinely interested in the option of a 485M / 580M in the M17XR3 to vote on the Dell Ideastorm and post there.

Here is the link:

There will also be a poll here on NBF just to gauge the response and activity. It is more important to register and vote on the Dell Ideastorm link.

So if you indeed are interested please take part in this.

Thanks!

Come on people. No one here is interested in a 485/580 in a R3?

the 485 gains over a 6970 are extremely minimal, after the price or cost addition it's not worth it IMO. PLus the current 485's don't have 3d support, or Optimus. azz.gif

Well first off the current 485m does have 3D support as there are now other brands including clevo that now have 485m / 3D 120hz models out. Plus the Optimus is working in M17X's that people have installed 485M cards. The 3D is the only thing that seems to be gimped, and it seems to come down to the way the receiver ties in to it. It wont fire up and the 3D doesnt come on.

The 485M still has a gain over the 6970 minimal or not so lets call them equal. Either way its disappointing to not be able to build a 100% killer system, its either nice video card or nice 3D screen; Not being able to get both is frustrating. The other gaming laptop companies, including old Alienware rarely did that.

Hey I would even try for a ATI/3D option if it had a chance. However it seems that it would more likely be an nvidia card over ATI 3D

Ok well we're in the Alienware Section, not the Clevo Section, and owners of the m17x R3- 3d kit version have spent 700-800 dollars on the 485 GPU from places like Eurocom, and were UNABLE to get 3d to work proplerly with their systems, it's documented, if you use google or PM me I can link you. It doesn't work with the alienwares as of yet.

Do I know my stuff? Or Do I know my stuff? As you can see about a week ago if not a little more Alienware has in fact released the 580m on their m17x R3, and as I predicted the 3d was a NO GO.... azz.gif
